Why is that a valid defense? Seriously?

You've got a mental illness.

Yes, but one will be classified as mentally ill while the other will be classified as "religious".  It's only a matter of degrees.

It's good that the holy spirit is handing out assignments now. The Ghost Board was getting ready to come down on it since it became pretty notorious for being a slide prof, what with only requiring an hour a week and an occasional fainting spell to get by.

I always figured the "Holy Spirit" was something they made up so there would be a triple invisible sky god.  I mean, God I can understand.  Jesus I can understand.  But once you've covered all that territory, how in hell do you come up with something as lame as a "holy spirit"?  Nobody even knows what the hell it does, besides making weird people talk funny.

Notice how no one is actually looking into the Freemasons on this? Seems like the perfect cover story. "No, it can't be us. Anyone who talks about Freemasons is clearly insane. See?".

Looks like your run of the mill, false flag Illuminati-Vorlon-Freemason alliance operation to me.

I saw this a while ago. I don't there was anything nefarious with them inserting her elevator speech in with the video of her at the podium. I think it was a simple case of the mic at the podium wasn't on so what she said wasn't recorded, so they dubbed in her elevator speech because they didn't have the time to fit the whole video into the segment and explain what was going on. And I guess they figured the video of her being dragged from the podium was more dramatic than the video of her being stuffed in an elevator.

What the question should be is what did she say at the podium and who was the man she was talking to and what did he say to her before she got up and went to the podium?

whatshisname: What's God got against Freemasons?

According to the true-believing Jesus freaks, the problem is that we require a belief in a supreme being - thus making us in the eyes of the Jesusy crowd nominally religious - and since we don't care whether you are Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, Mooslim, Zoastrian, Hindu, a Zues/Jupiter follower, vague non-specific deist (like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and myriad other founding fathers were, despite the Christians' attempts to rewrite history), or whatever, then we are somehow denying Jesus and are therefore Santanists.

They also don't understand that words have multiple meanings, depending upon context - and they have no awareness of history or anything outside of the USA.. Throughout the English-speaking world, aside from the U.S., the "worshipful" is an honorific ranking below "honourable". Mayors, for example are "worshipful," or "his worship", in Canada, the UK, Ausatralia, New Zealand, and elsewhere; "honourable" is reserved for provincial and federal officials. It doesn't mean that the citizens pray to their mayor, or think he's a deity; it is the traditional meaning: "respect". In keeping with the traditional meaning, the master of a lodge is still called "worshipful".  The religious nutbags only know how to apply the modern, perverted meaning of worship, and have yet another reason to get bent out of shape.

Frankly, I'm quite glad that they dislike Masonry, as I don't enjoy associating with asshats like them, and their feelings about the fraternity keep them from petitioning and thus imposing themselves upon me.

If you want the more serious theological answer, God is the diety, Jesus is the human manifestation, the Holy Spirit is a formless entity that imbues itself into every human soul. The schismy stuff comes over questions of whether they're different forms of one supreme being or three separate entities.

The Quakers do a lot more talking about the Holy Spirit than most, so have a couple good descriptions. "That of God in everybody" "The Inner Light", "The Seed". God and Jesus are external, the Holy Spirit is internal. It's a little chunk of God that everyone holds inside of them, which makes everybody holy*.

*Statement does not apply to Puritans or their offshoots, who think only the select get bits of the Holy Spirit, that it's determined at birth, and that everyone else burns in hell.

Christopher Moore used basically that notion, using the 'Divine Spark' term for it, in Lamb. When Jesus was returning from having learned Kung Fu and Yoga in the Far East, he was trying to come up with a way to explain the Spark to the Israelites, and his cousin John the Baptist suggests 'Holy Ghost' instead, since people get ghosts.

So when I was a ute, in Catholic grade school, they started running this Trinity concept by us very early on.  I never understood their reasoning for it.  If God was going enter into your being, why did he have to take a different form and be represented by a bird?  It, to me, was all part of this schizoid personality thing, that God had going (yes, i didn't know anything about schizophrenia at that age, but, I knew bizarre behavior when I saw it) and put me on the road to agnosticism by the time I hit Catholic high school, and then atheism, by the time I graduated.

/I always wondered why the Sacred Heart of Jesus was on fire, but, was smart enough not to ask.  I know symbolism was a big part of it, but c'mon, it was the 20th century and they weren't talking to the peasants anymore.

Arachnophobe: cptjeff: Marcus Aurelius: exick: It's good that the holy spirit is handing out assignments now.

Apparently Mohammed failed to get ghosts, but would have enjoyed Kung Fu.

BluVeinThrobber: I'm confused

It was a joke: in Freemasonry God is referred to as the Grand Architect, since a mason just puts the stones where the architect tells them.

2014-03-17 09:32:41 PM

HopScotchNSoda: whatshisname: What's God got against Freemasons?

ALL HAIL SANTA!

Yeah.  It also sucks that we're a pretty small Lodge, being up in the White Mountains.  Small enough that I'm the last new member raised, and that was 5-6 years ago, now.  There are several closer, and I'd thought about having a dual membership, but the local Lodge meets on the same nights as my regular one.  Still, it is pretty cool having me, Dad, and Grandpa all in the same Lodge.  At least I can usually get the night off for the major events.

the whole trinity concept always seemed like the Achilles's heel of Christianity to me...  so God is god... and Jesus is god and this spirit thing is god... all without beginning or end... they always have been and always will be... 'consubstantial'...but Jesus was 'begotten' at a specific time in history (roughly 2k years ago)... but he existed as one with the 'father' prior to that... and after that.  perfectly clear.  so if Jesus is full-fledged God... then that whole crucifixion thing wasn't really that big a deal then was it?  I mean, he's not 'a' god he is 'the' God... all knowing, all powerful, without beginning or end... so the whole 'painful suffering and death on the cross thing' isn't really all that bad for a GOD then is it... especially since he knew what was happening and how it turned out... now if he was really just a man... and faced that... that takes more balls in my opinion... men can be killed... gods can't.  So the second you throw Jesus into the trinity and say he is 'consubstantial'... not that he is 'made by god' or 'created by god'... but that he 'is' God... ok, now you've gone just a bit too far with your little story.

The guys I used to play D&D with (at the Lodge, on Tuesdays) mostly hung out outside of their ceremonial sessions (which of course I wasn't privy to, but w/e). That and their fridge was always REALLY well stocked for beer.

We usually have a meal, open the Lodge, talk about what ailments are keeping most of the old guys from being there, then close the Lodge and go home.  We also do some more interesting things occasionally, like "The Old Man Speaks" annual event, where we gather for a night of short Masonic lectures.  I think I'll be volunteering to speak on Joseph Brant and the tradition of Masonic fraternizing across the lines during conflicts.  A few times now, since several of our members are employed by the local tourist railroad line, we've had a "moving Lodge" meeting on the train.  We'll go have a short meeting in one car, while our guests hang out in another car, then we share a catered meal.
