But in the throws of an outage, the language gets sloppy and the feelings come out.

Yes. Sloppy. But only in the throws of an outage. Only then.

Sigh.

Sadly my government employer uses Google-everything. And we have a snow day. So I am expected to telework, but the stupid system won't let me telework, and instead of being able to go about my day I had to sit here for 9 hours, just in case it came back.

First of all, it's not even called Gchat-it's called Hangouts now. But in the throws of an outage,

This is why "social media liason" isn't a real job.

"Throws"? Sadly, possibly an English major. Sigh.

I use hangouts on occasion for Mom to see the grandkids. It drops video chats a little less than on Skype, I suppose. Perhaps 4-7% less crappy.

Our weekly team meeting, usually done via Hangout, had to move to Sqwiggle, which wasn't able to handle all of us at once. Also, we couldn't screen-share when we needed to.

You kids and your gadgets. We didn't have these fancy "phones" when I was your age, we used smoke signals. Adapting to new technology is for fools.

It was originally called gtalk. I still have the standalone client installed at work, because having to keep a farking browser open on some page works for shiat when you're using it as a chat client and not mini email client or whatever idiocy they want. 9/10 times I IM someone using the hangouts it takes hours to get back to me, if they ever do. When I IM someone using the standalone client, or using a similar product (say, Lync), lo and behold, they respond quickly.

And it's for work stuff. Not just them ignoring me because they hate me.

I noticed it was out, assumed it had something to do with the earthquake earlier, and just went on with my day.  It wasn't a BFD for me.

I was wondering if there was someone in this exact predicament.  I'm sorry you had to murder time in cold blood this particularly unproductive way.

Work in government with Google Apps too, except the HIPAA BAA prevents chat, hangouts, whatever. The down time for Google Apps (mostly Drive) was a bit distressing, though.

'Gtalk' is still the official name and you can still download google talk.

The 'hangouts' is ridiculously retarded beyond all reason... I hate that damn thing.

I like the application well enough, but holy shiat is "Hangouts" ever a stupid name.  "Google Talk" was a fine name, and that's what everyone I know still calls it.

Is there a way to use the Gtalk program other than leave the hangouts/gmail browser open? I was given to understand that the actual simple gtalk client you have been able to use for years, as a simple, clean, standalone, IM program, is gone, no longer supported, etc.

There's a Chrome extension that keeps Hangouts open without having a Gmail (or Google+, etc) tab open.  I think it can run independent of having Chrome open on a Mac, but I'm not sure about Windows.

Sorry to here that you have to work at home. When I leave work, I'm done with it until I go back. My work doesn't follow me home.

I'm not advocating working a lot of unpaid overtime, but sometimes it's better to work from home if you're waiting for the plumber or a furniture delivery, etc. Those are the times when you need Google Chat/Hangouts to communicate with the people in the office.

It seems so. Some service or other isn`t very good. Never heard of it myself. Not many people were affected though so that`s ok.

as the guy that administers this to a room full of mostly know nothings to use to do support calls, believe me, I was fully aware of it being down yesterday-

the calling to outside numbers for free, with much superior call quality to any phone I've ever used is worth it, though.

I work from home and I only knew about it when I saw subby`s headline.
