Haven't you ever seen an action movie, subby? What happens when a grenade goes off right next to the hero? Right -- the blast throws him backwards through a glass window and he lands in the street, winded, and barely rolls out of the way in time before a light pole comes crashing down on him. Now, tell me -- do you think he just jumped through that window because he wanted to?

No, don't be stupid. He was sent through that window by shock waves. Shock waves are like normal waves except they travel through the air. And, newsflash: an earthquake is a LOT more powerful than a hand grenade. It's, like, ten times as powerful. So if a simple grenade blast's shock waves would send you through a window, don't you think an earthquake's shock waves could be felt in a helicopter? Can you at least acknowledge that possibility? I hope that you can, and maybe in the future you should consider not being such a smug snarkmongerer and learn something before you post here.

That's what they are supposed to do.  Go on a TV set and look up.  See those lights hanging up there?  They aren't always the most secure things in the world.  A desk is a pretty good thing to have between you and 50 pounds of metal and glass falling from 15 feet over head.

At 4.4 it really depends on the building you are in.  A 4.4 in a high rise is downright scary due to the level of sway.

Christ, it was a farking 4.4. When did Angelenos become such pussies? I woke up, looked at the ceiling fan, said 'huh, earthquake" and went back to sleep.

Also in terms of new anchors...

As God is my witness, I thought earthquakes could fly.

2014-03-17 06:56:25 PM
That was slightly amusing but I thought they handled it well.  They didn't repeat any silly urban legends about earthquakes, and knew to go to the USGS to report the magnitude and epicenter.  I would guess all newcasters in California get earthquake reporting training.

Yeah, given that people are regularly killed by falling lights or lighting rigs, if I were on a film or TV set during an earthquake, I'm diving under something solid.

It felt stronger than a 4.4 usually would. It was pretty light except for one strong jolt to the side.

Also, when an earthquake starts you don't know if it's going to be a 4.0 or an 8.0.

That's what I thought about the first 10 seconds of the 6.8 we had up here in far nor Cal last week, which felt considerably smaller than what the USGS says it was. A 4.4 is what? A whole 3 wiggles? The dog shakes the bed more jumping up on it, and its a farking chihuahua.
