We didn't have a dog in this race.

All we care about is saving face to preserve US imperialism.

We should have just stayed out of it and let Russia and the Ukraine figure out a Russian and the Ukraine issues.

This unchecked aggression shall stand, man.

Basically.

Obama's name only comes up twice in the article, and once is about how he froze assets.

Obama eats arugula and wears mom jeans while shirtless Putin spits flaming vodka all over Eastern Europe like a Slavic Godzilla!

I think that's pretty much what we're doing.  And as far as saving face is concerned, we're not the ones that just lost a metric crapload of territory.

Keep fawning over the Russian while calling the president a Communist, GOP.  There's no way your base won't get mixed messages (mainly because most of them were indoctrinated into religions founded on mixed messages).

2014-03-17 05:30:53 PM
What, exactly, do you want him to do?

Some people have a massive hardon for the Cold War, but you know, the Crimea ain't our fight.

2014-03-17 05:31:17 PM
What a shame it is that Obama won't stop Putin from throwing Russia's money down a hole because of some old Cold War fantasy.

2014-03-17 05:32:39 PM
What do people want him to do?

Get us involved in another war in Anatolia in a country that doesn't want us there, where we have no business being, and which doesn't involve us? Because the last two worked out so f*cking well for both us and the countries involved? Or perhaps send a Global Hawk drone loaded with Hellfires over to Moscow to fly through Putin's window, since THAT has been working out so well for us lately?

What, precisely, do people think Obama should be doing here? What is it that ought to happen?

2014-03-17 05:34:00 PM
So Obama looks weak and feckless, the left still loves him, meh.

2014-03-17 05:36:21 PM
This is bad news... for Obama.

2014-03-17 05:38:40 PM
Europe is the one looking weak, they don't wanna loose Russia's natural gas.

In the long term this will hurt Putin. The U.S should play the Long game. This isn't the Cold War.

If there there was a time machine that could make a Theodore Roosevelt vs Putin fight happen.  My bet would be on Teddy.

Pretty sure it was "rationing gives you your fair share."

"Fair share?"  Sure thing, Lenin.

I dunno about that

Putin plays the long game and he plays it good

Roosevelt was (IIRC please correct if wrong) someone who was spontaneous and lived for the moment.

Brains versus balls isn't always an easy fight to predict

Defense contractors would love an old-fashioned war. We've got enough tanks just sitting around that we can put to use quite well in a land war in AsiaEurope.

Good. Fine. Who cares? Fix Detroit before you decide to go fix Crimea.

Seriously, let the rest of the world stew in their own juices.

We have crumbling cities and starving children and autocratic theocrats right here at home.

America first!

You do realize there is a middle ground between the worthless sanctions we enacted and WW3. For instance, we could have sanctions that have enough bite that it doesn't leave our enemies laughing at us.

If you can't tell the difference between the EU and the continent of Europe, then please don't sit and try to explain the world to us.

cman: We didn't have a dog in this race.

We do have a dog in this race, its just not the one that most people think it is. The dog we have in this race is to get the Europeans to get their act together and stop relying on the good ol red, white and blue to solve Europe's problems. We have made the strategic decision that China and the east is where our major concern lies. Given scarce resources this means that by definition we are not going to commit troops to that area of the world. If Europe doesn't want Russia as their gas pimp don't expect us to run the extortion racket to protect them, they should figure out some other answer.

2014-03-17 06:04:58 PM
What the hell was he supposed to do? We aren't going to take military action and Europe won't let us unilaterally freeze the assets of Russian companies or take further economic action since they need Russia's sweet sweet natural resources.

What would you recommend?

The only bargaining chip that would be likely to have a significant impact is if the EU got together and stopped the westward flow of natural gas. But they won't and Russia knows this because they have been using that bargaining chip for years to keep the EU out of Eastern Europe.

Here's an idea:

What if we took the trillions of dollars we spent blowing up Iraq and Kumquat and Bananastan to keep the precious, precious oil flowing, and spent it on trains here at home?

I've made the drive between Memphis and Nashville hundreds of times. Each time, I've seen hundreds and hundreds of cars with one driver in them. Why is there no dedicated train line?

Oh, right. Because trains are socialist and oil companies give lots of money to Republicans.

Yeah sure, CNN, the network that brought you the Gulf War, is unhappy that Obama isn't cranking up the war machine once again.

Big surprise there.

Why bother?

Newt Gingrich showed that expressing  a positive opinion on what should be done could ultimately undermine the "everything Obama does is bad" principle.  It's much safer simply to criticize without offering an alternative.

Sending large amounts of basic goods to the front leads to shortages here at home.  But of course we'll let the profiteers buy up all the stuff they can and sell it back to us at five or six times the price, undermining support for the war in the process, because we'd rather let Hitler win than give up our Free Market (offer not valid in Texas, Arizona or New Jersey).  Fine strategy, Petain.

But that wasn't really my point, else I'd have left the poster alone.  Wars are expensive, rationing or no.  That war that the 101st Fighting Keyboardists are trying to drum up will drive up the government's expenses, whether the 372nd vote to repeal (ahem, excuse me, "defund") the ACA succeeds or not.  Calling me a Communist will not change that fact.  But then we can always borrow to fund another war, just like the last ones, and never mind the poor-mouthing over SNAP.  Way to go, george w. bush.

If it comes to war, then we're going to see either more taxes or more borrowing, and quite possibly rationing and a draft.  If you have a problem with that, then don't join the chorus for MOAR WAR!

Toe to toe with the Rooskies? Hell yeah!

Halliburton and Lockeed/Martin and Dick Cheney ain't rich enough yet.

And we need more crippled vets, because they look so good in our campaign ads.

We need to salute their service while we cut their benefits and health care and food stamps and basically fark them over at ever chance.

It's the Murican way!

OK then. Do read up about the fact that the EU is a economic and not a political union.

It can't act politically, and thus can't appear weak in this context.
