If college co-eds what to sleep with me, who am I to say no?!

Separately, as they began looking into the complaint, Times editors learned from the author of the articles, staff writer Jason Felch, that he had engaged in an inappropriate relationship with someone who was a source for the Dec. 7 story . . . .

Oh, come on, we're obviously being punked here.  There's no way that's his real name.

I think I saw this movie on Cinemax back in the 80s .

Of course, it was all scrambled, because my parents wouldn't pony up for Cinemax, but I think I saw a boob for a second or two a few times.

I can find another job, the number of co-eds that will sleep with me is astonishingly small and getting smaller every day.

I know all of those words, but I really don't understand how they can be put into that order...I mean, I guess I can CONCEIVE of a possibility, but the concept of those words in that order does not compute...

WRONG!
It's a bad idea to tell your boss you're sleeping with a source.

Sleeping with your sources is fantastic.

All kinds of interesting ambiguities here.

First of all, nothing here says he slept with one of the victims. A much more likely "source" would be an administrator or clerical worker. But nothing says he didn't, either.

Second, it's not clear why he "voluntarily" came forward to disclose this, as he claims, since that alone is enough to get him fired for cause. If it was just an inconvenient attack of conscience, well, okay. But I bet someone at the college found out and forced his hand.

Third, he apparently screwed up the actual story, which he reported long before he (claims he) was sleeping with the source--in other words, whereas he said Occidental had failed to report sexual assaults, in fact they  had not. But Occidental waited all this time to rebut him, even as they were scrambling to hire "crisis PR" firms to deal with the aftermath. I'm not saying they're lying--college administrators aren't paid enough to break the law  and cover it up. But it's weird.

If everything is the way it looks from this report, well, it's tough but fair. In any event, it looks like this is where the story will stop, unless this guy made any enemies at rival papers.

I agree fully, unless she was one of the victims. I don't think it would be appropriate to have a fling with a young woman who was recently sexually assaulted and might be having emotional problems when it comes to men, or sex, or anything really.  It seems like that could be bad for one, or more likely both, of us.

After reading the article, I'm a little confused on the dumbass tag. I think Dumbassery happened, but I'm trying to figure out who to assign it to, and every one that initially might warrant it, they do something smart that sort of obviates the dumbass-ness.

1) The reporter. He made a statement that it was wrong of him to sleep with the source. He makes mention of it hurting his reputation, his paper's reputation, and his family. So I'm thinking he was a married man. This is the biggest dumbass part of the story. However, he made an admission to his boss (which got him fired... which he accepts the consequences of) which means he still has some integrity in this, even if belated. He also states that he stopped using his source as a source (other than love) once the affair began. If you want to question whether or not to believe him, he did confess to the relationship... maybe he was threatened for exposure, maybe not. But that admission seems to point to some sort of honesty. He even points to an error in not understanding the Clery Act fully, and apologizes for that.

2) The school. Occidental seemed to be under-reporting the sexual assaults, and with the furor* of college campus rape culture, this paints them in a bad light. They accept the initial reports in the paper without comment. Then, after hiring a PR firm, they push back and state that the Clery Act exempts them from the need to count some of those sexual assault reports. It's a bit slimy, but it's smart.

3) The papers (LA Times and Observed). They have to do a "take back" on their stories, calling everything in question. However, what we're presented is a somewhat fuller look at a story rather than a breezy one paragraph affair that leaves you head scratching and wondering who proofreads these things. Though they have an asterisk to their story, I think it represents that the story was initially written, then amended as further details came about before pushing it. Or at least it's a good way to portray an ongoing timeline to the story.

* rape deniers are gonna deny

This whole story is a mix of Sad tag, along with wisps of Unlikely.
