The Catholic church controlled NCAA once again beats down the Methodists. Because jesus.......

I know SMH means "shaking my head", but I always felt it worked better as "so much hate".

This reminds me of a year or two ago when my daughter, who has done debate in middle school and now high school, was complaining that she had found a really good piece of evidence to support her argument in a certain debate topic, but that she didn't think it would be a good idea to cite it in the debate because it wasn't really from a credible source.  What was the source, I asked?  She said it was a study from "some Bible college in the South."  Which one, I asked?  She had to look it up, because she couldn't remember, and then read it off, "Let's see, it was . . . oh, here it is, it's [rolling her eyes] 'Southern Methodist University.'"

I had to explain to her that SMU was actually a real university and not just some weird Bible college, and that it was actually pretty well respected academically.  She was very happy to be able to use the source.

/Yeah, I know, CSB.  Or not.

MugzyBrown: NCAA needs a playoff.  This is ridiculous

what do you think the NCAA Tournament is? I hope SMU wins the NIT so they can give the NCAA a giant middle finger.

On the plus side, no Larry Brown 'play-the-right-way' smarm during the tournament.

I (think) Mugzy was being sarcastic, in that with a field of 68 teams, nobody can really complain about not making it.   Although the point was made that SMU was in the Top 25, they were 23rd & 25th, and those rankings (I assume?) were before they lost their first round game.... had new Top 25's come out (or are coming out), I doubt SMU would be ranked.

I'm not a big basketball follower but it seems like there should be a objective way to decide who goes to the tournament

Instead they'll go to the NIT where they'll feel right at home among the rustlers, cut throats, murderers, bounty hunters, desperados, mugs, pugs, thugs, nitwits, halfwits, dimwits, vipers, snipers, con men, Indian agents, Mexican bandits, muggers, buggerers, bushwhackers, hornswogglers, horse thieves, bull dykes, train robbers, bank robbers, ass-kickers and shiat-kickers.

Being declared the 69th best team in the country certainly is quite the accomplishment. I'm sure the committee will have many a sleepless night.

I'm not certain, but I have a feeling this was Craig James's fault.

ModernPrimitive01: I'm not a big basketball follower but it seems like there should be a objective way to decide who goes to the tournament

Well, certainly they could wait for the final rankings and let in all of the Top 25 by default.... which, in this case this year, they did....

http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/rankings/_/year/2014/poll /1 /week/1/seasontype/3

As you'll notice, SMU's performance not only dropped them from the Top 25, but, they got NO votes what-so-ever.

If you are not even mentioned in the polls at the time of selection, you don't have much argument to say you definitely deserved to be in the tournament.

Heh. I wonder if there are some old SMU fans who just spit at their monitors.

I actually saw them play this year.  They whooped up on UConn pretty good.  To be fair, UConn didn't much show up that day.  SMU did impress me though - they played a good game.

Somehow I knew this was coming. At least we'll host in the NIT. That gives us a chance.

Anybody else see that piece of crap 30 for 30 last night on ESPN crying about the demise of the Big East on ESPN and how football money destroyed a great basketball conference on ESPN but teams like Syracuse and Pitt were more interested in money on ESPN and showed no loyalty on ESPN!

There was a reason it used to be called the Big Ea$tPN. So glad, too, that ESPN gave the final years of Jim Calhoun's career the network's patented "Roethlisberger rape? What Roethlisberger rape? Roethlisberger was accused of rape?" treatment that its crack reporters are known for.

I saw they beat UConn twice this year.  I didn't know that UConn had left the Big East.

There goes my bracket.

PluckYew: I didn't know that UConn had left the Big East.

They didn't so much "leave" the Big East as they were left standing when the music stopped.  The ACC didn't want them, the Big East Catholic basketball schools united, and UConn still wanted to be able to play football.

At least they did point out the irony at the end.  Conference conceived and created by TV money was ultimately destroyed by it.  I have a little more patience for that than for the ACC bozos who wax on and on about their tradition (when it comes to Maryland leaving) but conveniently forget that they're the ones who got that ball rolling with Miami, VTech and BC, and later kept it going with Syracuse, Notre Dame and Pittsburgh.

Too young to remember the glory days of the Big East but I figure it was a blessing in disguise for the Georgetowns and Villanovas to separate from the football schools. You lose Syracuse and UConn but in the coming years they'll find it a lot easier having to pay 12 basketball players as opposed to 100 plus football players - plus no concussion law suits.

2014-03-17 04:36:27 PM
They made the best of a tough situation and found themselves a great TV deal with FS1, but their ratings all season were dismal and Big East tournament attendance wasn't great (Semifinal & Final were about 5000 short of a sellout, earlier rounds were worse) so it'll be interesting to see what happens going forward.

They're locked in with MSG through 2026, but I can't imagine the Garden would continue beyond that when they'll have the option to host the Big 10 or ACC tournaments instead.

Hey! I can go to the NIT first round and the NCAA final four all in my own town (or metropolitan area anyway).

/Can't really go to the final four. Not at the prices I was seeing on StubHub

I think there's less of a debate at the top of football polls. Like, this year it's pretty obvious who the top 4 football teams were.

Yes it was obvious.  I'm not sure the committee would have selected the best four teams and left Alabama out of the playoff though.

It would have been way too hard to publicly justify with them not winning the SEC. There will be years where a conference gets two teams into the playoff, but I think a year like last year it would have been impossible to explain it.

Not ranked in either poll and 53 in the RPI? Probably not the stand SMU basketball should be taking right now.

Not surprising. Though, remember, at one time Mateen Cleaves liked his chances in the NBA.
