They were adorable, in an irascible, eclectic British way.

One of the first tv cooking shows where the hosts were obviously having fun and not "working."  Julia was enjoying herself but some of the 70's cooking show hosts seemed angry, arrogant or drunk.  Or all 3.

I enjoyed that show. Those broads used more butter, cream, and bacon than one of Paula Deen's wet dreams.

They did a salmon dish with blood oranges and rosemary that is very delicious. I also want to cook kedgeree one day.

Loved that show so much.

Jennifer died of cancer, she asked Clarissa to bring her a tin of caviar right before she died but Clarissa didn't get there in time. Clarissa ate the tin of caviar at Jennifer's funeral in her honor.

On one hand, they both exuded a rare irresistible charm.

On the other, watching them mix things with their hands with full sets of rings and red pained mains made my guts turn.

/was rather sad when I found out they were thrown together by a production company, and weren't actually friends.

Or "painted nails".even./although I like the idea of "pained mains".

I has a sad.  I bought their cookbooks and the video series.  But really, it was the show more than the recipes that I enjoyed.
But they were the originals with the "wrap it in bacon" solution to everything.

Nigella's recipe for kedgeree is not at all traditional, but very good.

Whatever happened to that one British cooking guy who was always drunk?

She was always very open about being an alcoholic. I think she was sober for many, many years though. That's why you never see her enjoying a beer at the end of the show,as Jennifer did.Actually Jennifer ended every show with a drink and a smoke.

She actually had a rather fascinating and rare illness that was an adjunct to alcoholism: she developed gland failure (which ballooned her weight) due to the quinine in the 6 pints of gin and tonic she once consumed a day. It's a disorder only usually found in those taking ling-term malaria medication.

She was also the youngest ever barrister in the UK, called to the Bar at 21. The other bar put a stop to that career, however.

The Galloping Gourmet?  Went to AA, stopped drinking and stopped making food with calories.  Needless to say, he faded from view.

I think they're probably thinking of  Keith Floyd, who went to the grave in the manner of a million drunks before him...

They don't make them like that anymore. Or the 'branded' media world we live in doesn't let us see them. Either way it's sad.

Yes, I was thinking of the Food a la Floyd guy, who is apparently dead now.

I am a fan of Graham Kerr since my kidhood in the 70s, and watched his later syndicated show where he made the low-cal food.  It was well thought-out without getting into the bland stuff that was proliferating at the time.  But, for a show like that, he was having too much fun, which was wayyyyyy against the norm for that era, but I thought it was entertaining.  I saw when he was on one of Julia Child's shows, and those two were laughing as much as they were cooking, and they cooked a lot.

Clarissa made her post-law, sober career off that, so, can we really complain?

/But in a spirit of misanthropy, I only came across this thread to see if my idea of a headline: "0 fat ladies" had been greened. It wasn't, a couple of times.

I loved watching them too.  Clarissa had been sober for 27 years and was extremely proud of that.  I need to Google and see if either of them wrote an autobiography.  Both of them had very interesting lives.

There was this guy...in France, he drove around in a taxi and basically just went to people's houses and insulted their food. I forget the name, but that show is brilliant. If you are ever overseas I recommend trying to catch a rerun of that. God I wish I could remember the name.
