Kind of like my car after driving across the Great Plains, except the bodies weren't human. Or bicyclists.

adding that an incident of this kind was "relatively rare".

Just how common is relatively rare?

Cyclists have the same self preservation instincts as skunks, that is to say none whatsoever.
Frenchmen have the same self preservation instincts as skunks, that is to say none whatsoever.

So I'm gonna say there's like three per year, at least. Arrogance never beats physics, but there's only a relatively tiny part of La France covered in high speed rail.

My brother is a railroader - this kind of thing is so common (often suicides) that his railroad has a special crew that does the clean for this kind of incident and nothing else. They are always busy.

Awsome, I can see the Syfy movie of the week DEATH TRAIN! A high speed bullet train now haunted by a french cyclist, bent on killing whoever crosses it's path.

A French bicyclist was struck by a train?

No, this isn't a bookmark.

Bastard probably didn't even have the courtesy to buy a ticket either.

2014-03-17 11:08:02 AM
It was a cyclist. He probably didn't yield at the rail crossing gates.

/ That'll learn him to run red lights

Wait, the driver didn't hear the bloody great bang? Prettu sure hitting even a skinny Frenchman makes a bloody great bang.

The remains of the victim's bicycle were recovered by police at the level crossing.

How common is it that level crossings exist on the TGV?  I thought high speed rail was completely separated from vehicle traffic.

I've been aboard those "bullet trains" to get around in France and laughed at the mental image, when it arrived at the station.  I know; I should feel bad for that and I do.

Came here to say this. There's a "major" bike route through my morning commute and I can't believe the idiotic behavior. They have a dedicated lane for half of it even, and people STILL pull out in front of you without looking or signalling. There does seem to be a crowd mentality at work. 1-2 cyclists are hardly ever idiots. 8-10 seem to be the tipping point into idiotic road behavior.

/Is it just me or do Europeans also seem to think high speed trains are somehow less dangerous because they're common place?
//Though the article says "level crossing"... what the what? 173mph average and you just let people cross it???

how the hell do people not see and yield to a big ass train barreling down the rails

What is it with people that when they get on a bike they feel like they are invincible and no rules apply to them?

it shouldn't be an issue if people actually yield to the train

can you just imaging the terror of having to cross a level crossing by car/bike/walking when the possibility of a train travelling over 300 km per hour can come by at any moment.
obviously there are warning lights and bars and such, but it would be very unnerving to have to do.
when i was a kid back in the 70's i would sometimes daydream that if i didn't cross the road quickly the Blue Flame rocket car might come down the street and run me over.

200 mph. Assume you can see half a mile either way. You have nine seconds between seeing it, and feeling it.

What a train in France might look like.  Very helpful for those who have no idea what a train in France looks like.

Where's the body, you ask?  Use your imagination.  We can only bring you the image of a train in France.

It's relatively rare?  So normally they're still alive when they get peeled off the front of the train?

Seems like the cyclist catcher on front did its job.
