I submitted this with a better headline.

2014-03-17 10:10:39 AM
My headline was, "US Navy storms captured ship off the coast of Tripoli. This is not a repeat from 1804."

I was trying to figure out why we would do that...from the article it talks about how fragile the current libyan government is, so I would imagine that went into the calculus.

Are these the "annoying high schooler" kind of rebels or the "chop off your head" kind of rebels?

So...I guess we've picked a side?  Or something?

Sure it wasn't the Core? Sounds like the sort of thing the Core would do. Hell, when I was a two-star me and two other airmen would do that sort of thing twice before lunch.

Except they took the ship off the coast of Cyprus.

"The Morning Glory had been North Korean-flagged, but the government in Pyongyang on Thursday said it had notified Libya and maritime authorities that it had severed all ties with the ship because of the vessel's contraband cargo. "

Wow. How much must you suck if even Best Korea doesn't want to associate with your lame ass?

Finders keepers.

Dear Mr. President,

Please stop using our troops to save oil.

Sincerely,

This is the Libyan rebels' Benghazi.

I would have voted for it.

Yeah, they were basically handed an opportunity to rail against US military action and "imperialist piracy" or whatever when the US Navy inevitably acted against the NK-flagged ship, but turned them down. Interesting indeed.

I'll just toss this out to 'season' the thread a bit:  why does it always have to be U.S. commandos?  Huh?

The list of friendly nations who have significant special-ops forces is pretty short. Of those, the US is the most likely to have units forward-deployed to the region in a high state of readiness.

Pyongyang disowned the ship days ago, likely as not to make an unnecessary enemy out of Libya.

What?  They revoked the flag because the ship was stolen and they had no way of recovering it.

Alonjar: What?  They revoked the flag because the ship was stolen and they had no way of recovering it.

Oh is THAT what happened? OK, that makes even more sense, then. When the story was originally (poorly) reported last week, before it broke through the blockade, they made it seem like it was a state-sanctioned act of defiance by North Korea.

The new Libyan government is nothing but a Western puppet. The militias should have smothered it in the cradle.

The US navy is larger than the rest of the world's combined. Dealing with pirates is the responsibility of every navy. Thus, there's around a 50% chance any anti-pirate action well be taken by the US.

It's not the oil. It's the ship. Obama's been VERY anti-pirate.

Also, you'd think that this "no blood for oil" garbage would have gone away when we left Iraq and didn't steal all their oil.

SoupJohnB: I'll just toss this out to 'season' the thread a bit:  why does it always have to be U.S. commandos?  Huh?

Because it doesn't? Often it's French, or Israeli or British commandos doing this?

I really don't get the butthurt about this op. The ship had been basically taken over by pirates, and the Libyans asked for our help. The SEALs went in, took the ship back without a single injury to anyone. What the crap are we paying SEALs to do if not this? Sit around Virginia Beach and get in bar fights?

I hope the Israeli gonifs who were trying to buy the oil get a serious financial cavity search back home.

It wasn't a North-Korean-owned ship. They had a temporary Nork flag of convenience, which Pyongyang revoked because why not? They weren't getting a cut of the oil. RTFA.

Interesting. And bullshiat.

FTA - "The Morning Glory had been North Korean-flagged, but the government in Pyongyang on Thursday said it had notified Libya and maritime authorities that it had severed all ties with the ship because of the vessel's contraband cargo."

Norks are a massive criminal mafia. Contraband cargo is not part of their lingo. So, stealing back an oil tanker for the Norks sounds an awful lot like there  was something else on board, down in tanks.

Like .. a nuke or two?

Oh, good lord. FLAGGED does not equal OWNED. Most of the ships in the world fly the flags of Panama or Liberia, because those countries impose basically zero labor and safety regulations. Most ship owners have never been to either country. Please save your Tom Clancy fantasies for situations where they might fit the available facts. This was not a North Korean ship; it had a temporary Nork flag of convenience.

yeah i get that..... so how many acts of piracy are committed a year and in how many of those do Navy Seals play a part?

2014-03-17 01:29:17 PM
Woot- The SEALs doing a mission they are uniquely suited for!

FTA "A Cypriot police source said three men - described as two Israelis and a Senegalese - were detained for questioning on Saturday on suspicion of attempting to buy the tanker's cargo, but were freed after a court refused to issue an arrest warrant."

Interesting.

FTA: Any bloodshed would complicate efforts to negotiate a settlement with rebel leader Ibrahim Jathran, a former anti-Gaddafi commander who was in charge of protecting oilfields and ports until he turned against the government in the summer.

His campaign to seek more rights for Libya's underdeveloped east has won him some sympathy, but many people dismiss him as a tribal warlord with no political vision.

Any military conflict might boost his popularity and plans to establish a federalist state sharing power and oil wealth like under King Idris, who was toppled by Gaddafi in a 1969 plot."

Why do we consider him the bad guy exactly?

FTA: "No one was hurt in the tanker raid,"

So did they find a way to force the hijackers to watch Captain Phillips on repeat?

Doesn't anyone else see the hilarity of US Navy Seals stopping "Morning Glory"?

I can imagine Jesse Ventura breaking into a teen boy's bedroom, seeing his 'morning glory', and yelling at him to "STOP THAT RIGHT NOW!", giving him a serious sexual hang up for years.

Yeah, 'cause every shipping company wants to Flag their multimillion dollar asset out of a nation the rest of the world wants to see nuked into a glowing crater. Must be a lot easier to obtain Maritime Insurance, Port Authority clearances, makes for a easy time sailing past US Navy patrols when you're pinging "We're North Koreans"

Tom Clancy fantasy? What are you? A Twilight teenager?
