He had a cold and took a F***ing Sudaphed so he could breathe. That isn't doping.

Yes and no.

Lots of hockey players pop a Sudafed before a game regardless of whether or not they have a cold, because they feel it helps them breathe better.

Backstrom apparently took SO MUCH Sudafed that he actually failed the drug test (and no one else did).

I feel bad for the guy, but dude, maybe don't pop pills like candy during the freaking Olympics.

...and he informed the team doc like he was supposed to but doc did not fill out the form required by the IOC to make him taking the meds perfectly fine.

All this means to me is that smoking meth helps you play hockey.

He wasn't "pop[ping] pills like candy." There's a difference between popping a Sudafed (or four) before a game to breathe better and taking a daily dose of Zyrtec-D for over 7 years because you have allergies. Backstrom did the latter. If you take one pill every day, as Backstrom does, some builds up in your system, and you can "fail" a test because there's more in your system than there would be if you only took one pill the day of the game, which is how they set the limit.

This article has some good information on the subject.  http://peteridesbikes.blogspot.com/2014/02/nick-backstrom-more-reason e d-reaction.html
