Though it sometimes takes on a sectarian character, the violence is fundamentally about decades-old land disputes between semi-nomadic, cattle-keeping communities such as the Fulani and settled farming peoples such as the Berom, both often armed with automatic weapons.

But I thought an armed society was a polite society?

Well - it's a little more complicated than John Ford.  It's also about what invisible friend you have (or what you call the same invisible friend), and what shade of black as well.

You know; they actively hunt witches in parts of sub-Saharan Africa. They have, also, been warring amongst themselves from the dawn of time. They'd gladly cut their neighbor's throat for no better reason then they belong to the wrong tribe.

Been going on since the dawn of history. Herders want open range, farmers want your animals to stay the fark out of their fields. Thus, they don't get along. This is the conflict behind the biblical Cain and Abel story. The invention of barbed wire solved a lot of problems.

1892 Winchester in .44/.40. Only holds eleven rounds. Chuck was able to fire 12 in that opening scene because blank cartridges are shorter than the real thing, so an extra fits in the magazine. The producers dubbed in the sound of a thirteenth round so the firing would fit the theme music.

If only one side is armed, at least the violence doesn't last very long.

When did hundreds killed in village disputes in Nigeria become news?  The only thing possibly new here is no mention of machetes or necklacing.

"There's no such thing as free land. You make these homesteads go you'll have earned every acre of it. But you just can't make 'em go on the Mesa Verde. God made that country for buffalo. Serves pretty well for cattle. But it hates the plow. And even the government should know you can't farm 6000 feet above sea level! "

An armed society is a polite society.
It's just when two such societies clash that things get noisy...and shooty.

Oh, the farmer and the cowman should be friends.
One man likes to push a plough, the other likes to chase a cow,
But that's no reason why they cain't be friends.

Maasai warriors cover a battle field as they clash with bows and arrows with members of the Kalenjin tribe in the Kapune hill overlooking the Olmelil valley.

Also, Nestor died back in 1990, having been pulled through a spare tire by a graboid.

He did love his 'shine, though.

It is.

In this case, you have two armed societies clashing with each other.

I'm willing to bet that the Berom are polite to each other, though, and the Fulani are also respectful to their fellow armed Fulani.
