Authorities said the birds were cooped up in a house on North Washington Street.

Bad journalist! No donut!

I can almost approve of puns in articles; it would make Fox News almost bearable.

Having assisted in raising chickens, I don't care if you love them as pets or want to eat them, WHY would you ever let them in your house past the fluffy yellow phase? They're pretty filthy. *shudder*

Who keeps chickens as indoor pets???

Stupid, violent, smelly things.  I can't imagine trying to keep one inside, much less 200.

Let 'em roam the yard.  They do just fine outside... And if their population gets too large, the foxes / fishers / coyotes / etc will quickly notice and correct the problem.

/ That said, I repeat: Stupid, violent, smelly things.
// Ducks make much better "farm pets", and healthier-for-you eggs.

I don't even like keeping a dozen chicks in the house, I can't imagine almost 200 birds. I can imagine the amount of poop and the smell just by order of magnitude from the 40 I have in four big pens.

Keep silkie hens. They go broody so often you'll never have chicks inside again.

me, you and Jensen from the article:
"The conditions inside the house were very unsanity," Jensen explained. "They were chickens living throughout the house, anywhere from chicks to mature in every room of the house."

Shocked it wasn't Terryville.

My boss had about 220 chickens in a large coop at his farm (burned down from an arson fire last month). I can't imagine how bad that house must have been. We could regularly shovel a couple of wheelbarrow loads of chicken shat out each week. The house I'm sure wasn't cleaned like the coop at his farm was. Damn. People can be nasty.

Wow... This house is right down my street. I saw a bunch of cops blocking the road the other day and had no idea why. I would never have guessed chickens.

They should have just broken the law like the rest of us do. Keep two in a small, moveable, heated crate. Let them stroll in the yard as weather permits. Happy, illegal Connecticut chickens.

Chickens are the worst.  The smell on a hot day is horrible.  Even worse than cattle or hogs.

Think of the cholesterol problem they must have had from all those eggs.

But absolutely nothing like goats. I once mucked out a goat barn for a bit of extra cash. Good god I have smelled armaggedon or at least the left wing of armaggedon.

Maybe on an individual basis, but the hog farms in the S.C. lowlands were the most vile thing I have experienced in my life.

^This. Chickens SMELL. My parents have always kept chickens, and while they take the chicks and raise them inside (to tame them and keep them warm under a heat lamp), as soon as they get feathers enough to stay warm on their own, they get put outside. Keeping adult chickens in house? The ammonia smell would be overwhelming even with a few chickens, let alone many.

The last time I was at Tractor Supply Co., they had the baby chicks in for sale.  Since I don't have a coop or anything else for them, and already several pets, I declined.  Some folks need that filter, but it means they have someone in their lives to keep them sane.

As for the house, let's see if that Rehab Addict lady wants to touch it.

Yep. The only time I wore a face mask with a filter when working on a farm was to clean out coops. Smell even gets through the mask, but at least you're not inhaling chicken crap.

We've got a REALLY BIG PROBLEM!

fitmamaeats.squarespace.com

One hundred chickens was a big enough problem. Now we have TWO hundred chickens! That's a hundred chickens and ANOTHER hundred chickens! That's twice as many chickens! And the farmer will be back any second! I'm TOTALLY FREAKING OUT!

It's more than four tens, and that is bad.

I'm not allowed in TSC this time of year (personal rule). I REALLY want to raise birds, but I'm not even good at taking care of myself so I know it's a bad idea. One bird I could probably handle but they have to sell them in twelve pack, IIRC.
