It saddens me that anyone has to even address all the bullshiat. Just wait until we find out what actually happened. Is that so hard?

The craziest one I've recently heard is that a group of terrorists hijacked it and landed it in some hidden jungle airfield, and are repainting it and filling it with a nuclear bomb as we speak, to eventually fly it over a major American city to detonate.

To be fair, if you wanted to hit a coastal city that isn't a bad way to do it

Well you'd think the plane might land somewhere closer to 'Merica. I'm no engineer, but I think the whole not having enough fuel in one flight to get to a place inside the US to blow up would tend to create a problem with that scenario.

A 777 would make a serviceable nuclear armed cruise missle if properly prepped. One of the biggest problems with early nuke designs was their sheer size and weight.

I would have scoffed at this idea a few days ago, but now...I dunno. I dont necessarily believe it, but it a scary thought. Especially because we wouldn't be talking about your garden variety t'rrists. If this scenario has any validity it would take highly trained and well provisioned operators. *cough*norks*cough*

Maybe part of the problem here is that apparently all it takes for you to stop being skeptical of ridiculous nonsense is a short period of time of not having any definitive answers.

2014-03-15 07:50:00 PM
You don't need to steal a 777 to fly a nuke into an american city. You just need to plant one in the cargo hold of something flying to an airport like Ronald Reagan or LaGuardia. Just need something akin to a GPS proximity alarm.

It's not an impossible theory, assuming of course that the North is crazy enough to invite complete and utter nuclear retaliation... but here's the simplest argument against it: any state-sponsored plot would have much easier means to acquire a plane capable of delivering a weapon to the US.

Independent terrorists might have to hijack a 777 and risk alerting the whole world to their plans, but North Korea could just use one of their own planes. They could never fly the plane to the North without somebody seeing it on radar, and exporting their nuke to a distant location would also be risky. Makes so much more sense just to borrow a Il-62 or Tu-204 from their own airline and load up the weapon right at home.

To be fair, if you have access to a nuclear bomb, I'm sure that jet fuel is not an issue.

Considering that it is fact that there is no real idea what happened to the Malaysian plane, debunking anything now would be foolish....and just enable more wild claims.

Depends on your definition of nuclear bomb. It would be relatively easy to turn it into a dirty bomb, loading it up with various types of nuclear waste from hospitals and research sources. Nothing really high tech required.

I just don't understand why the hell has cable news had such a boner for this story.  A plane crashed/was hijacked, big deal.  Even if they knew from the start that it was a hijacking, not every plane hijacking is terrorism and - even if it was - not every act of terrorism on the other side of the planet needs 24/7 American news coverage.

Random baddies hijacking a plane in Asia != the next 9/11.

Now if this were some genuine Bermuda Triangle shiat where bystanders saw the plane vanish into a giant dimensional portal in the sky, then maybe I could get into it...

Anyone with half a brain already knows what happened.  Kim Jong Un in his "airline captain" latex mask commandeered the plane.  He flew it to North Korea, and had his henchmen paint it to look like Air Force One.  When everything has calmed down, he's going to fly the plane to DC, park it next to the real Air Force One, and just wait for the President to get on the wrong plane by mistake.  Then only Vin Diesel, Liam Neeson, and Charlize Theron will be able to save the world.

It's a mystery, so you get ratings just because our brains don't like unsolved situations.  And, it doesn't require any real reporting, so it's cheap.

Nutty conspiracy theory that I heard and laughed at but then thought about it and then didn't laugh anymore: After 9/11 America was determined not to be helpless as aircraft crashed into high population areas so they got together with the aircraft manufacturers and designed drone like software so that if an aircraft looked as if it was a rogue it could be taken over by the US government on the ground and either landed or ditched in a safe area. Then last week this software was hacked and someone took over the aircraft from the ground as a test to see what they could do. US doesn't wanted to admit they have this capability or admit that it was hacked. Ha, ha, ha (what a nutty idea..but...wait a minute....)

Nevermind that the computers on airliners don't work that way*, the cost of implementing a program like that would be so massive that there'd be no way to hide it, even in the "black budget".

*Yet. Forthcoming generations of aircraft like the 787 are more computerized, but most of the airliners flying in the world are more than 10 years old and would be more trouble to "hack into" via the internet than your microwave oven.

Ok, an unknown plane shows up on US radar. It's not responding to radio calls. Fighters are scrambled to investigate. Jetliner doesn't respond to them. It's going to be shot down before it gets anywhere near a coastal city.

Really? So the aircraft manufacturers couldn't provide a backdoor like Google and Facebook does? Serious question, not a computer geek but I would think the latest NSA activities would have been laughed at not so long ago and the government would have had over ten years to implement this.
