(Yahoo)   Tom Watson has an impossible lie up against a tree, hits his wedge with his back facing the hole. Cool: the ball goes about 40 yards and hit the flag, with Watson settling for par   (sports.yahoo.com) divider line 21

Hit the flag? Not from that vid, subby. What, are we supposed to take your word for it?

Not the caddys fault. Why didn't the cameraman notice the flag was cock-blocked?

Didn't Seve invent that shot, or was it around even before him? I remember reading a magazine years ago in which he demonstrated a few trouble shots, and that was one of them.

Stationary camera probably.

I know, right?  Having won it 5 times already you'd think it'd be easy for him as a senior.  Sheesh.

I have that shot. I've never hit it quite that well, but I'd have got it on the green easily.

I've done it before but not in competition.  Dave Pelz has been teaching it for years, though he advocates bracing your shoulder with your other hand and your arm across your chest.  Watson freeballed it.

And this is ironic because if you read some of Watson's old books from the 70s and 80s you can see a bunch of shiat that Pelz appears to have "borrowed" without attribution in his later books.  Not illegal to copy moves or advice, just kind of ...shady.

He's the biggest charlatan out there, just barely over that tall guy with the stupid hat that killed Charles Howell, III's career and a couple of others.

Yeah, the latter is David Leadbetter.  He also farked up Michelle Wie for a while.  He was one of the first "swing gurus" and I've read some of his books.  As you  might expect there are a lot of horribad ideas there and some are flat out contradictory.  Just cult of personality marketing of band-aid fixes that show up in golf mags every month.  He does that a lot, too.

As for Pelz, he made his name by following tour players and collecting an early version of "fancy stats", which they eventually became aware of and that got him some attention and customers.  Some of his theories about how to actually play golf are far too cerebral and mechanical, as you might expect from a former rocket scientist.  Data and systems for everything.  And as noted others seem borrowed.

You can't take a game that, after enough repetition, is 90% mental and make that other 10% carry the load.
