That's not surprising. I figured North Carolina would be higher than 20.5%, though.

I'm actually a little surprised it's not higher than 30%.

That said, I'm sure that smokes are cheaper here than just about anywhere else in the country, but even here I can't see how anyone really can afford to smoke.  Even the shiattiest cigs made off of the tobacco swept off the floor around around $3 a pack, so a pack a day habit is approaching $100 a month.  Anyone who's making minimum wage probably should quit smoking for financial reasons as much as health reasons.

Come on, Kentucky

/I know you can do better than that

Well c'mon, it's Kentucky. After drinking bourbon and watching horses run around, what else is there to do?

Does a giant hole underneath with a hidden meth lab count as a basement?

how many times do I have to tell you, no meth labs in the basement.  they go in the bedroom, preferably the kids' bedroom.

/at least that's what I think subby is going for

My sister and brother in law live in Lexington. They would swear it's more like 75%+ that smoke. Having visited many times, I'd have to agree.

/ and Lexington is Kentucky's version of high society

I've never been a smoker, but I'm curious to hear why people start smoking today.  With everything that has been shown about the health hazards of smoking and the cost of a pack of cigarettes, what makes someone actually try out a cigarette and get hooked?

In realtor speak, that's called a semifinished basement.

It's still cheaper than eating.  Wonderful appetite suppressant.

On the one hand, I wish Missourians were smart enough to correlate the two. On the other hand, Darwin must be fed.

Kentuckians are better moonshiners than to blow themselves up.

Fark your sister?

It's Kentucky, the family trees don't branch.

But I was told that if you ban something only criminals will have it and will become a huge, unmanagable problem. Since states with bans have a lower incidence than those without bans, I simply cannot trust that data given my previous worldview.

So, what did I learn on Fark today?
Since my family is from Ireland via Kentucky, I'm screwed.

A lot of the time people start smoking because its the only break that their crappy jobs allow.

I have a friend who didn't start until he was 20.  All I remember is that he was cleaning out a house his mother was renting out and ran into some flavored cigarettes.  Some time later, he switched to Marlboros and has been smoking ever since.

Maybe they aren't kidding that cigarettes are addictive if that's all it takes.

No need to be a smoker in KY.  With all the coal burning plants (you can clearly see the yellow haze), you can get all the second hand smoke you need.

As someone who lives there, I call bullshiat.
It's more like 60%.  Sounds like they polled a bunch of liars.  And half of them claim they started smoking at 13 years old.

I thought people in the south smoked a lot, and then I visited NJ/NY. Jesus Christ
