Don't blame him.  It's also the only digraph remaining in the Russian version of the Cyrillic alphabet.  There's also Ë, Ъ, and Э are still hanging around.  There are 33 letters there and nobody's going to miss those four. Ы is a variation of И; Ë and Э are just variations of E, and Ъ hasn't been used since pre-Soviet times.  Ь isn't voiced but it's phonetically important.

That and, you know, the whole unprovoked invading all of your neighbors and your neighbors' neighbors thing.

Among other things.  But this guy does not seem to think in rational terms:

Straying beyond politics, Zhirinovsky suggested last month in the Duma that people should not kiss on the lips but only on foreheads. He also advised disinfecting the skin before planting a kiss.

If Quebec history has taught us anything, it's that legislators trying to dictate language use is /such a great idea/ and totally doesn't lead to a whole dick bag of (un)intended consequences.

In related news, the persistence of the œ dipthong in English is what provoked de Gaulle to veto Britain's membership of the Common Market. Not a lot of people know that.

Ha! A few of the letters are hard to pronounce, so what? I hated this letter when I was learning Russian but I wouldn't advocate eliminating it. Especially not because of such inane "reasoning" from Major Douche.

Let's say that when things are tough and the Government has limited resources to actually make their subjects lives better they'll create a solution first and invent a problem to 'solve' it.

For Quebec, those politicians bleat on and on about 'sovereignty' and those with limited reasoning skills get behind them, while the economy goes to hell in a handcart.  The rest of Canada thinks the politicians are just whiny biatches and waste taxes by forcing the government to provide services in their language.

Making signs French only doesn't create jobs or wealth, dumbasses.

"I have some hostages, and they are tied up in a sack at the top of a flag pole. I'm going to blow them up at midnight, unless I get these three demands: ONE! I want a million dollars! TWO: I want a getaway car waiting for me! and THREE: I want the letter M stricken from the English language. See, you have to make one crazy demand, so if they catch you, you can plead insanity. Heh, heh, getaway car."

My objection to the letter was always that, to me (probably because of being so used to the English alphabet) it always looked like two letters ("b" and "I").  I keep trying to parse it as two letters instead of one when I see it in a word, and it's really annoying.

Animals that say "you" in Russian? Because that's where that letter is.  It's hardly underused.

The politician seemed to have a longstanding issue with the "guttural" letter, which he claimed his son wasn't able to pronounce as a child. "He once told me, 'Dad, dad, look, there's a 'мишка'," the Russian word for 'bear.' "I thought 'What 'мишка'? A bear? But he meant 'мышка'," the word for "mouse."

So... it makes the difference between bear and mouse. But it's useless.

Pretty sure he's basically calling Asians (or certain ethnic groups) animals.  He's just another racist nutcase.  Every country's got a few.

We spent an entire hour in my first quarter Russian class trying to learn how to pronounce this.

Our teacher would make a noise, we would all repeat it exactly, and she would say that was wrong.

Then she tried having us put a pencil crossways under our tongue and say a long i.

Still wrong.

Eventually we just went with a short i and she said that was perfect.
