ErsatzImitater: EngineerBob: Higher caste huh?
Since we can't get our paws on her since we last got our paws on her ...Dosn't that make her...
Untouchable?

She (the consular official) was actually from the lower castes (translation of her caster even seems to read "untouchable") according to Indian newspapers.

She is a dalit, which - depending upon who you ask - is either untouchable or just one rung up the ladder from untouchable.

But (1) caste hasn't been part of India's legal apparatus since independence.  Of course, it still matters in social matters, but legally all Indians are casteless.

(2) even back in the good ole days of Varna Uber Alles, caste and socio-economic status were not necessarily tied together very strongly.  For instance, if you had the money to rub shoulders with the hoity-toity set, you wanted kitchen staff from as high up the caste-ladder as you could get, since you did not have to worry about offending some guest's sensibilities*.  But these high-caste dishwashers were not uber-rich dandies who employed legions of damsels as combination parquet flooring / ball washers.  They were minimum-wage schlubs just like you find in every diner in the modern US.  They might be karmically evolved powerhouses, but they still slept twenty-to-a-room in a shack fronting the alley out back.  And your barely mid-caste dharma-slacking ass was rolling around on piles of rupees with giggling, dusky-limbed, be-saried natch girls.

* And gods preserve you if your local power-brokers included Muslims, Parsis, Jains, or even Christians.  Some EIC officials employed three complete and non-overlapping kitchen staffs, just to whip up a kosher meal for whomever might drop by for a visit.

That's a good thing.  Maybe they'll have to hire people that speak better English.

I hate articles where every paragraph is one sentence.

It makes me think the author never had a complete thought at any point.

Lazy writing.

Lazy readers.

This was already planned to happen, so no "whoops" is needed.
As the article states, she's already back in India so it's a bit fruitless.
As for her punishment, she's a woman in India.
