ahaha I was working on a frigate once and one of the techs said to me "Yo, don't pull the fire switch on the torps... the bottles are charged and you'll really piss the dudes on the jette off."

I looked down at the switch and was soooo tempted. Unexpected airshots are hilarious. Gets you a meeting with the commodore real quick.

Well at least this time there were no casualties, check out the Battle of May Island, 2 subs sunk, 3 subs and a light cruiser damaged, 104 men dead, the only problem was that the enemy wasn't within a 100 miles of where it happened

Dummy weapon, eh? A sensible precaution.

It's a good thing that Britain is a very large island (by European standards) or else they'd have sunk it years ago.

This is why they give the Army sticks painted to look like guns and tell them to shout "bang" very loudly when they pretend to fire them.

The article says it was "jettisoned".

Do ships have some mechanism to jettison ammo if there's an ammo bay fire or something?

Nope, magazines can be flooded, ready use ammo (small batches stored near the weapon) can be tossed overboard during an emergency, shipboard torps are carried in tubes that eject them pneumatically (compressed air) since this was not a warshot but a training torp I assume what happened is either someone turned the firing key prematurely or there was a malfunction that launched it.

/I really don't want to piss off the sailor who can toss a Stingray torpedo overboard....

The only way its being jettisoned is out the fun side.

Fires on ships suck. At least they design it so that things that can catch fire (engines, fuel, laundry, messes) are usually separated from ammo.

The Willy Ds skipper was considered a rising star right up until they accidentally launched that torpedo. I believe that the arrest of the entire crew is still a standing record.

FFS, did they have monkeys running that ship?

* The Porter's anchor tore the railing and lifeboat mounts off a docked sister destroyer while maneuvering.
* The next day, a depth charge fell from the deck of the Porter into rough sea and exploded.
* The day after that during a torpedo drill they accidentally launched a real torpedo at the USS Iowa.

Loved that game. I was saddened when the arcade took it out. I remember the other game in those pods, the Martian Death Races and the Virtual Geographic League that "operated" the system.

Never could play any PC or console games after that based on BattleTech. Nothing could best running around an arena with HUDs and all those controls.

Hell, Americans can top that:

CSB:

Aircraft carriers used to test their catapults by launching wrecked cars out into the bay. Once, one of them skipped a mile and a quarter across Sinclair Inlet until it took a 'bite' just 100 ft from the other side, right behind the local supermarket. It had plenty of energy left. I was driving the main drag in front of the store when a plume of water erupted a good 100 ft up. I though we was being attacked! They spent two weeks digging that car out of the mud flats of Blackjack Creek

End CSB
