I thought the headline was an overstatement but I read the article and well, there you have it.

2014-03-14 02:11:12 PM
Starting Thursday in Michigan, a woman must purchase an additional insurance policy if she wants reimbursement for an abortion, unless her life is at stake.

The new law drops coverage of most abortions from existing policies -- even to terminate a pregnancy resulting from rape or incest. Women who buy their own individual policies, rather than getting coverage through an employer-based plan, won't be able to purchase the additional coverage, called an abortion rider, from Michigan insurers.

Can Republicans get Rape insurance to protect themselves when they say something stupid about rape?
(and yes, I did say rape twice)

2014-03-14 02:16:42 PM
This is what you get when you put Republicans in charge. This is apparently an extremely difficult concept to comprehend, because people keep farking putting Republicans in charge.

2014-03-14 02:16:45 PM
I'm fairly certain that's going to be overturned in short order

2014-03-14 02:17:47 PM
But remember, it's in fact the DEMOCRATS who are waging a War on Women.

2014-03-14 02:18:36 PM
Wouldn't it be simpler just to pay for it with a large tax on rape kits.  Seeing as all women are guilty of rape, why only punish the ones getting pregnant from it.

2014-03-14 02:19:18 PM
Man, f*ck that shiat.  As a Michigander, I'm sorry for this.  I voted against these assholes, but it wasn't enough.

2014-03-14 02:19:27 PM
"Opponents dubbed the law 'rape insurance,' arguing that women would have to anticipate the possibility of being raped and purchase the insurance before the assault."

I never liked this argument. ALL insurance is for anticipating undesirable eventualities. Life insurance? I might die unexpectedly. Car insurance? I might get into an accident. Fire insurance? My house might burn down. All things I'd prefer I didn't have to worry about, and yet things that I buy insurance for, since I live in an uncertain world.

"Gov. Rick Snyder (R) vetoed it, arguing that it wasn't 'appropriate to tell a woman who becomes pregnant due to rape that she needed to select elective insurance coverage.'"

THIS is the right argument. It's offensive that normal health insurance won't help women who have been raped. You shouldn't need special insurance for that. There's no reason for it.

Obviously, we needed to this as a first step towards improving the economy, asserting ourselves in foreign policy, and ushering a new era of prosperity and happiness for all Americans.

What a shocker the companies rush to be able to deny people coverage just because they got the go ahead to be shiatty to their customers, I know it's crazy talk to think that a company might just support it's customer base with quality service over funneling money to the shareholders.

2014-03-14 02:25:58 PM
A study in the medical journal Women's Health Issues found that 14 percent of women who underwent abortions put off paying rent and 16 percent delayed buying food in order to pay for the procedure.

Well if you're poor, maybe you shouldn't be having sex. Or going outside where you can be raped.

That is the end game here, right?

I keep posting this because it may give some hope.

Ladies,
Come to California. The weather is fine. The state has a surplus. And best of all, WOMEN ARE TREATED LIKE HUMAN BEINGS.

There are trains, planes, and automobiles to get you here. Don't give up - just move to a place where you'll be welcome for who and what you are.

I wonder what the premiums are?

Perhaps best if women become self-insured and put aside a few bucks a week in fund to cover the possible need.
Maybe they could stop paying for the un-covered birth control to pay for the fund, yea sounds like a responsible way to accomplish it.

If only there were some sort of healthcare system where everybody was covered for everything all the time...

I think this is about right. Insurance companies are using the theocratic bullshiat of the right as coverage for denying care or adding fees for a legal medical procedure. Their greed knows no bounds.

Gov. Rick Snyder (R) vetoed it, arguing that it wasn't "appropriate to tell a woman who becomes pregnant due to rape that she needed to select elective insurance coverage."

What? Common sense from a Republican? Maybe I was wrong about Michigan.

Undeterred, Right To Life Michigan gathered 300,000 petition signatures supporting the measure, igniting the infrequently-used citizens initiative process. Both houses of the legislature passed the measure in December. There's no veto in the citizens initiative process, and Snyder's signature was unneeded for the law to go into effect.

This sort of thing is why I am genuinely concerned that everything in the country will, without exaggeration, go to absolute shiat if Republicans ever have control of a majority of political power.  They're already busy ruining the states they're in control of, whether its instituting draconian women's "health" measures or allowing unfettered pollution rights for whatever company wants them.  I cringe to imagine what sort of apocalyptic disasters they'd set up for us if they ever got their claws on the whole country.

And that's impressive because I normally have a lot to say about things.

You'd think that insurers would want more loopholes for abortion. The more expensive it is out of pocket, the more likely it is that insurers will be on the hook for thousands of babies with extra chromosomes who could otherwise have been prevented with a $20 copay.

That goes against the "maximize profits short term, don't worry about consequences for tomorrow" mindset of many big businesses. Gotta get those quarterly earning numbers and such.
