Way to over react. The common core standards just makes it so they "teach to the test." Kids will just forget about how much they hate America 20 minutes after they're done with the exam.

I think we should offer to give every man, woman and child in Alabama free food, shelter, and booze--free everything, tax-free, for life--in return for their giving up their statehood and being turned into a nature preserve which Americans can visit to observe the wild cracker in his natural; habitat.

I had one of the anti-common core people in my office earlier this week. His big concern was the massive government database that was being built around Common Core.

I showed him the FERPA law that prevents this. He called me a liar. I showed him the part of No Child left Behind that prohibits it. He called me a liar. I showed him the IDEA law that prohibits it. He called me a liar. I showed him the state law that prohibits it. He called me a liar.

There is no reasoning with some people.

I've heard this before. The "thinking" is that if you explain to children that some boys like boys and some girls like girls, you have to explain homosexual sex to them.

That invites the questions of why gay sex needs to be explained earlier than straight sex, or why explaining gay sex is worse than explaining straight sex.

(Spoiler: it's bigotry)

It seems to be some of the biggest opposition is this fear of loss of "local control" of the education standards.

We need a national curriculum that covers the basics but leaves independent exploration of subjects open.

Said curriculum needs to be insulated from religious ideologues afraid of science and history that doesn't fit their "America fark YEAH!" attitude.  Learning we did some shiatty things isn't a bad thing.

We don't need more tests.

And I'm a tepid supporter of common core.  So far the implementation seems to be tripping up teachers that apparently lack reading comprehension (thinking of the English teachers that drop Faulkner for a technical manual that was listed under the heading indicating it was for science class room reading, not the English class room).

My only complaint about common core is that it seems to be pushing singapore math.  I love math, I have a math minor, and the idea that I probably am going to have to relearn math just to help my kid learn is silly/daunting.  Though it should realign with how I was taught some time in the 4th 5th grade.

Singapore math sucks, but there's worse. At my kid's elementary school they used the Saxon curriculum, which was godawful, because they didn't want the kids to waste any time on understanding fundamental concepts when that time could have been spent relentlessly drilling on multiplication tables.

"We don't want our children to be taught to be anti-Christian, anti-Catholic and anti-American," he said

Does this idiot know that pretty much what is included in Common Core is already taught in Catholic Schools? What a moron.

"Social justice materials typically include far-left proposals such as acceptance of homosexuality, alternate lifestyles, radical feminism, abortion, illegal immigration and the redistribution of wealth."

Those "far-left" proposals basically mean "Don't be a dick to others who do stuff you don't like", not "Hey turn in one of those people you hate and/or do what they do too". Asshole.

Pretty sure he's paraphrasing The Sheep and The Goats, but I don't see that it really applies here.

The Sheep and the Goats

31"When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.

34"Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.'

37"Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?'

40"The King will reply, 'Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.'

41"Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.'

44"They also will answer, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?'

45"He will reply, 'Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.'

46"Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life."
