Lobster?!?  NOOOO!  Oh wait, lobster is dirt cheap because of a glut of supply.

Those poor people and their refrigerators. How dare they live the high life! Oh, wait...

Wait, this era's welfare queen is a white surfer dude? At least the Escalade part is the same. WHY DO YOU HATE AMERICAN-MADE CARS, FOX NEWS????

With all of the bullshiat our government wastes on....bullshiat, this is what they biatch about.

I'm sure the grocery store and the lobster fisherman who receive money from the EBT program and then pay their American employees would disagree with Fox that this is a waste of taxpayer money.

I never criticize or care how members of Congress spend their salaries. They're paid by taxpayer money too and don't do dick either.

He was a rare kind of "on" last night. The first segment was perfect, and "McConnelling" was one of the funniest damn concepts he's come up with in a while.

yes, he was especially pissed at Fox for that. That's why he continued on beyond what he would've normally given them

2014-03-14 01:07:22 PM
I think he could have kept going for a little while and then just pulled out some numbers to make it clearer that they really are just fracking lying now.

I wished he would have replayed the section where he pointed out that Fox News is against food stamps going to bait so that people can work to catch fish for their own meals.

Republican philosophy: "People abusing food stamps waste government money. Therefore, we should gut the whole program. Now, let's give the Pentagon billions of dollars worth of tanks, F35 engines, and other shiat they don't actually want or need."

BTW, I did notice that surfer dude was at a Kroger/Smith's store buying that packaged lobster.
It had a "Manager's Special" sale tag on it. Close to the sell by date, most likely 50% off.
No highbrows by that stuff when it's close to exp. Store needs to turn it.

...and making fun of FOX News is like shooting fish in a barrel lately. Not even that fun anymore.

Not to mention lobster is the most overrated food ever and the market is suffering from a huge glut in supply, so much that McDonalds is considering a McLobster sandwich.

It's always been bewildering to me why this narrative of poor people taking advantage of the system to live an "easy life" without working is so widespread in the US.

I guess I should start paying more attention to the crap that Fox News is pumping into the softened brains of the average Amurkin.

And that's just returning to what lobster was BEFORE it caught on with snobby rich assholes. It *used* to be a 'poor person's' food.

The "bait shop" bit was a very good one... it seems so frivolous and then you realize what people do with bait: catch seafood at near-zero cost.  I have to assume they're all so stuck in their own frame of mind that they envision this broke-ass person buying bait and then jumping on their boat with a cooler full of expensive beer and a hired guide like rich people do, instead of going down to the public fishing pier and catching some dinner.

They usually have those nasty things in Maine in the summer; it's like $6.99 for a mini-torpedo roll full of imitation crabmeat with a single rubbery frozen lobster claw on top.

Personally, I like lobster a lot, but that might be a comfort-food thing; it was a staple at all the big family get-togethers and picnics. I get that they're not exactly bursting with flavor (when mayonnaise overpowers something, you know it's weak) but I still love 'em.

Well, that's true. Specifically, he's miscasting a moral hazard argument from Fox as something else, and then attacking the strawman as, as Subby puts it, a "steaming pile".

Gosh and golly, that Stewart is hella sharp, isn't he?

The seething hatred Fox News has for the less fortunate is appalling.  It really says something about a person that watches and agrees with the bile they spew.  Disgusting "people".

lostcat: It's always been bewildering to me why this narrative of poor people taking advantage of the system to live an "easy life" without working is so widespread in the US.

A large part of it is a generational thing, (e.g. old people - the primary target audience for Fox).

My grandmother died of cancer and took a long time doing so. My grandfather was a small farmer and it took him almost 25 years to pay off the hospital. Living on a farm they didn't go hungry (much), but they never had two nickels to rub together. A typical high school lunch for my father was a slice of homemade bread and butter, a chunk of homemade cheese, and whatever was in season or canned (apple, veggie, etc.). This was true for 98% of the farming community.

The non farming families on assistance, their kids ate school lunches or brown-bagged 'store bought' food: Bologna sandwiches.Their milk, flour, butter, and eggs were free.  It may not sound like a big deal, but trust me It chapped my Dad's ass that he was working on the farm two hours before school, well into the night after, and these families were eating government surplus - some of which certainly came from his own farm - and the assistance kids were getting free and/or reduced clothing and shoes while he had to work 'overtime' at neighboring farms to make a couple extra bucks to have shoes he could wear to school. As late as the '70's I knew farm kids who did their morning and evening chores barefoot (even in the winter) because they only had one pair of shoes and couldn't afford to trash them - they needed them for school. I moved away in the early 80's; it is probably still like that for some. (Except now instead of the small farmer being in debt for 100k+, it's probably closer to half a million).

                                                                *      *      *

One of my very first 'work' memories: I was riding with my Dad early one Saturday morning. I was exceedingly lucky to have a 20 hour a week job at 13 - not a 60+ hour back breaking farm job that paid almost nothing like most of the kids my age. Anyways, we went past a small home with a tiny front yard - fairly uncommon outside of town. My Dad looked at me, stopped the truck, backed up and said: 'Look at that place and tell me what you see...'

I saw two fairly late model cars and a pickup in the driveway; another couple vehicles up on blocks. A dirtbike, two snowmobiles, three or four bikes laying in the yard and on the porch. In the back of the pickup were at least two chainsaws and other equipment; maybe four or five cord of wood stacked near the road for sale. I've forgotten what else, but it was fairly cluttered with 'stuff'.

My Dad looks me in the eye and says: 'I've known that man for thirty years and he's never worked hard enough to break the Sabbath a day in his life. His father was on assistance, he's on assistance, and there's no doubt in my mind his five kids will be on assistance...'

/That is Fox's audience.
//To give you an idea how ingrained the memory of the Depression had on that generation: my mother is 90, has lived a middle to upper middle class life the last 30 years or more, and she still rinses/reuses her ziploc bags.
///Both of them wanted and helped people down on their luck throughout their lives. It was the government's inability to find their ass with either hand - especially with regard to public assistance - that troubled them.

He misrepresented the Fox point: the current levels of welfare available are a moral hazard, ripe for abuse.
