Meh, that film died when Sacha Baron Cohen quit. It could have been the closest he will ever get to an Oscar. I honestly believe he would have killed it in that role.

Agreed. Also the surviving members of queen wanted to white wash mercury's life. Who wants that?

For this film to work they need Cohen to star and Steven Soderbergh to direct.

The My Little Pony Killer: May said: "What led us to that conclusion was the last three movies that he's [Cohen] made - The Dictator, Les Miserables and Hugo - in which he makes outstanding performances, but they're very much Sacha Baron Cohen performances. And we thought there has to be no distraction in the Freddie movie. You have to really suspend that disbelief - the man who plays Freddie, you have to really believe is Freddie. And we didn't that could really happen with Sacha."

You know, short of bringing Freddie Mercury himself back from the farking grave, you're just going to have to deal with the fact that no actor today is going to be able to convince 100% of the audience for this that they are him.

THIS!

SBC was, perhaps, the only actor who could have come close to bring the right mix of showmanship and quiet that would presumably be needed to portray Mercury - and I think SBC had the chops for it.  As for vocals...I don't see how, no matter who got picked...that they don't get dubbed.  You just can't recreate that voice, and it's always going to fall short.

No thank you. Shelve the idea, and walk away.

This ^^^.

With how over-the-top and showy Freddie was, I would think he would approve of SBC playing him in a movie. Because, well, SBC is also showy and over-the-top.

SBC is also a near-doppelganger for Freddie. That is all.

/looked forward to this movie when I heard about it

I love Whishaw but he seems ill-suited for this role.
