Wait a second.  Putin just lost the frigging Ukraine, and WE'RE supposed to be the befuddled ones?

It's almost as if the media has no idea what the hell it's talking about.

There some good assessments in that piece.  One thing the "Putin doesn't respect Obammer!" crowd doesn't seem to get is that Putin doesn't respect anyone, and certainly not a mere American President.  If Putin had been in charge in 1989, he would have added 2 feet to the height of the Berlin Wall just to spite Reagan.

It will be interesting to see what happens to that crowd if the pressure from the US and EU actually does make Putin back down. Will they even be able to comprehend that mom-jeans-wearing Obama beat back True Manly Leader Putin?

Louche doesn't rhyme and isn't a noun.

And only a fool can't see what an utter piece of sh*t Putin is. See: George Bush.

The ultra-right's obsession with Putin is truly mind-boggling.  Apparently they conveniently forget that Putin stands for just about everything the American right claims to be against.

This isn't hard to understand.  Politicos seem to enjoy turning a nice game of tic tack toe into multi dimensional chess.   Ukraine as a whole has many strategic assets --hell it was a part of Russia for 300 years prior to 1991. Crimea  even more so as a warm water port.

Imagine if Castro tried to kick us out of Guantanamo, except Guantanamo was as important as California.   It's not happening, period.  Obama could be president of Russia.  Autonomy is not happening.

From my perspective, the only way he has "befuddled" the United States or anyone is by taking a blunt force approach to Crimea on the generally accurate assumption that nobody is willing to start World War III to stop him.

The only thing - only thing - Putin has working in his favor right now is that nobody values Ukraine as much as he does.  The west sees it as a corrupt, broke, deeply divided country that will be a perpetual white elephant for anyone who chooses to be its benefactor.  Even a substantial portion of Ukraine sees that country as, at best, a puppet of the former soviet empire.

Putin is about as calculating as a guy who robs houses in the shiatty part of Detroit, because even if it's reported the cops are never going to show up.

Putin is a 21st century Stalin wannabe. He doesn't have any "Morals" or "conscience" holding him back.  He's going to do exactly what he calculates he can get away with, exactly when he thinks the time is right.

The worst part of all is that millions love him for that.

fta The Russian elite are in living a life of luxury in Western Europe. The city the Kremlin know best is London, where Russia's rulers own houses in London's most expensive districts and hire out Britain's most prestigious bankers and lawyers. And the Kremlin clique has come to love Her Majesty's treasure islands: They launder their fortunes in Britain's empire of overseas sovereign territories-tax havens-from the Caribbean to the Channel Islands.

It's kinda hard to select the most idiotic thing Dubya said during his time in office, but I submit that "I looked in his eyes and saw his soul" is a good selection, because of its wide-reaching and multilayered geopolitical cluelessness.

Well, that's just wrong, isn't it?

Winter is ending and the only cards he's holding are IOUs.

In his paranoia regarding Ukraine, he's managed to drive most of eastern Europe even harder towards the EU and NATO. And given a good hard incentive for Europe to switch LNG suppliers, from Russian to American.

Russia may well keep the Crimea region, but it'll cost them far far far more than it's worth.

Putin knows the gate. Putin is the gate. Putin is the key and guardian of the gate. Past, present, future, all are one in Putin.
