I lived in that district when she ran. I voted for her. That district could in no way be described as "purplish."

Lord_Baull: redqueenmeg: I haven't seen a whole lot of her commentary, but I have seen some, and what I saw of it was well-thought-out.  What's the difference if she has an odd name or is pretty?

For me, the difference is someone in the C-suite believes the odd name and the pretty are good reasons I should be listening to her.

Well, while that is annoying, I'm not going to discount her opinion based solely on that, just as I wouldn't adhere to her opinions based solely on that either.

She made some good points and didn't reserve her scorn for just the Republicans; nice to see the corporatist Democrats getting called out on TV once in a while.

What? It's only been Republican since 1977 and they win by double digits.

It's as if they crazies on the left saw all the attention the crazies on the right have gotten over the last couple of years and decided they could have it, too.  And all it takes is the complete evisceration of their political party.

Yeah - Imitation being the best form of flattery and all that. It is cute though.

The funny part is that when the crazy on the left comes out and starts calling for confiscation of firearms and jailing global warming deniers etc it's going to make the loonies on the right look like a bad PTA meeting.

WTF Indeed: I like how MSNBC is now going the Fox News route by hiring attractive women to sell their brand. Because, you know, the hardcore MSNBC viewer doesn't drop the feminism card at the drop of a hat.  I applaud the choice of brunettes. You're right. Before Fox nobody had attractive women as hosts.

slayer199: Actually, if the GOP becomes more socially moderate I think they'd win back the younger voters...they're just too stupid to realize it.

I agree, though I don't think they're too stupid, I think they're making the miscalculation that the "Evangelical" demographic offsets the "younger voter" demographic and helps them win elections. The sooner they realize that The Church is losing membership while "Younger Voters" is a strong demographic worth embracing, the better off they'll be.

Yeah that one's a particularly empty cliche. The young people who are conservative are almost always ridiculously sheltered, and leaving school for the real world will open the eyes of at least some of them and make them less conservative.

And for every liberal who shifts towards the right as they become more invested in the status quo, there's another one who gets screwed by the status quo and moves farther left.

Once upon a time, back in the days before AM radio and FNC shrunk the tent and turned the GOP into the ball of crazy shiat it is today, I'd grant that such a thing was at the very least possible. Not sure how attractive the GOP in its present form would be to anyone who isn't already in it.

This has to have been studied by someone somewhere -- I wonder how many people have changed their party preference to Republican from something else or changed their orientation to "conservative" after being liberal/independent/disinterested/apolitical/whatever from 2005-present? I would be very surprised if new repub/conservative voters weren't limited to young adults who grew up that way, people who joined conservative churches and people who married into it.

If they're smart the Republican Party's researched this, but I doubt they'd make the results public. Some day I'd love to see some actual data to confirm my preconceived notions...

it's actually a pretty attractive party as long as you're doing well

it relies upon blaming others for your hardships, which only works when your 'hardships' aren't anything critical like a single mother trying to ensure her kid has food. when your world is insular to the point where the major issues in your life are things like people around you speaking spanish or having to wait a short while before purchasing a gun, you have a welcoming party

Compare that to right-wing nutjobbery. Modern American conservatism has become the philosophy of freeriders. You know that asshole who drives 200 yards past the "right lane closed ahead" sign and then gets pissed when you won't let him enter traffic in front of you? That's the model for what now passes for "conservative" behavior.

dwrash: Her insistence that the age gap between the Democrats and GOP will remain constant is historically inaccurate.

As people get out of school and go into the real world they start to form their own opinions start shedding the liberal leanings of today's educational institution.

I came out of school democrat, move to the GOP, back to Democrat (thought I would give them a second try), now I am Independant for life.

I'm socially liberal (support gay marriage, support anti-discrimination, support civil and workers rights) and fiscally conservative (we need to actually be able to pay for this shiat instead of kicking the bill down the street to the next generation) and anti-banker/wall street.... if we could afford it, I would be all in for single payer healthcare, but history has shown that politicians would just raid the fund like they did with social security.

Not a single party out there makes sense to me anymore.

Quoting the article linked below:

THE GIST
- Contrary to popular belief, people generally do not become more conservative as they age.
- Seniors often describe themselves as being more tolerant and more open to new ideas in their old age.
- What's happening in society when people come of age often greatly influences the set point for their core beliefs.

More power to her if she's secure enough in her marriage that she's not threatened by that sort of thing too.

Also, I watched the video. It was fairly reasonable and we should be looking at our (Democratic Party) candidates with regard to corporate influence.

So you think it's ok to sacrifice Labor and their values to the capitalist machinery just so everything will stay smooth?  Maybe it's time to shake up the status quo and demand real change rather than accepting that Labor will have to wait a little while longer (again) for "their turn".

I've heard this a bunch, but I've never seen it.

That's because it is largely an outdated truism. When capitalism was still maturing in North America it was a valid observation. Opportunities existed, capital was available and class ceilings tended to be weak. The situation has changed. We need a new vocabulary to describe today's economy. It's not mercantilism, though it has many similiar symptoms. It isn't quite an oligarchy...yet. It's very similiar to early mid industrial revolution. Large numbers of people are marginalized by automation, computerized systems, etc. We need a new paradigm. Technology has evolved faster than society has. In almost every single generation that has gone before, the pace of change has allowed society to adapt over a period of time sufficient to allow valid adaptations in attitude, ethics and mores to be passed on. Now we face a world where all of these may change during the time it takes to acquire a University education. The lessons learned aren't even valid for the time it takes to have a family. Alvin Toffler didn't get a lot of details right, but he foresaw a real problem.

Lucky LaRue: Mentat: Prank Call of Cthulhu: "Fawns all over" = "Wrote seven short sentences, one of which says, 'Krystal is spot on,' and links to a YouTube video with a transcript"? Ooooooookey dokey, then.

You have to remember that anything a liberal says that's more that two sentences is a rant.

Translation:  We can't argue facts on this one, so let's confuse the situation with semantics!

I think you may be confused. The headline is a misrepresentation of the article. Standard for Fark. Semantics deals with the actual meaning of words.
