Incredulous?  Or Concerned?  And who precisely do you suggest custodiet ipsos custodes?   In cases of malfeasance or incompetence at the local government level are we supposed to, I don't know...wait for the invisible hand of the free market to fix it somehow?

Not sure if it's the case in this situation, but usually the FBI gets involved if it thinks the local authorities are corrupt or attempting a cover-up.

This death stunk to high heaven and I'm glad someone is doing something about it.

If anything, there's a lot of general farking incompetence in the macon police and coroners office.

You are right, this case was not swept under the rug because he was black.  It was swept under the rug because he was not from a prominent local family, not a star football player, and most importantly, a murder would have looked bad to the school's athletic department. Race probably doesn't play into it. I noticed the other High School in the area is being questioned as well, I would bet that some kind of intimidation by both schools athletic departments are being accused of intimidation. Valdosta/Lowndes could have been the setting for Friday Night Lights.

It's a majority black city. The principal is black. I would say it's far more of a "cover our asses" moment than racism.

Motivation, IMHO, is irrelevant.  If idiot administrators are covering their ass by committing a felony then put them in jail.  The current bullshiat that people with white collars should get fined and slapped on the wrist has to go.

positronica: Before you start screaming "cover up", please do some more research from actual non-biased sources.  The Feds have gotten involved, but so far they have given no indication what-so-ever that they disagree with the State's findings in the investigation.  There has been zero new evidence at all that points to a cover up, while at the same time, further analysis of what evidence there actually is in the case, has only continued to reinforce the official findings.   There's nothing fishy about the surveillance videos, there's no sign that they were tampered with, the original theory of the case, while bizarre, has been shown to be both physically possible and in line with all the evidence gathered at the site.  At this point, it would be one of the biggest cover ups in criminal history if it was discovered that Kendrick Johnson's death was anything other than a tragic accident.

So a 1-2 hour gap in time on all four videos is not weird at all? Yeah, ok.

Civil rights law. If the local and state cops deny you due process, the feds can get involved.

So, the best I can surmise from the minimal evidence is that this kid may have been accidentally killed while being bullied by football players, and the administration covered it up/didn't pursue it aggressively because football is GOD in South Georgia. Still seems like it should be a GBI investigation; is being denied justice because you're not a football player a federal civil rights issue?

this.  that video was so sketchy; and hate to think it but how much you want to bet there is no other copy (digital or tape) still available?

Isn't something like that, you know, tampering with evidence and a felony?

Shouldn't someone be in jail JUST for that action?

I bet the officials involved were also outraged when Clinton lied about a blowjob.

If it had been a white kid, it would have been faster.

If it were a white kid it would have been solved within the first 48 hours.

But amazingly. black kids have the innate ability to fit themselves into tight spaces and pass away. That's science!

Right. Because the cops are only incompetent with blacks. With white victims, all of a sudden they know how to perform an autopsy
and investigation.

Or maybe there's actually some racist bean counter sitting at city hall telling the Police Chief to mark it accidental so they don't have to waste any man-hours solving a negro crime.

There's racism and then there's this stupid shiat. Save your outrage for a real racism case.

Best friend is an assistant DA in Lowndes County. Asked what she thought about it. Said she'd reviewed all the evidence and that it is indeed a case of horrible accidental death. There's no evidence suggesting otherwise.

A civil rights leader reviewed the evidence and came to the same conclusion as the investigators: http://www.valdostadailytimes.com/kend rick-johnson/x2112910298/Rose-To uchton-believe-no-cover-up-in-Johnson- case?mobRedir=false

It is a horrible tragedy, and I hope the family can find some sort of peace.

Cerebral Ballsy: GranoblasticMan: Cerebral Ballsy: I wonder how much coroners and medical examiners make? Is it on par with private practice?

You do realize coroner in many jurisdictions is essentially a political role and does not actually require one be an M.D. (or even have basic scientific training), right?

Georgia requires that you be at least 25 years old, have no felony convictions, have a high-school education and complete a week's training course in death investigation before you take the job.

What. The. Fark.

Exactly my reaction when I found out too. =(

chuggernaught: Would a school or schools really go out of their way to cover up a murder to protect a football team, or prominent students?

Yes, they would. The high school football stadium is next to the college campus, because the high school used to be but hasn't been since the 1980s. Anyway the fights after the game were always blamed on college students even though we knew to stay the hell away from there on Friday Nights. The Stadium seats over 10,000 and is too small on Friday nights,

I also seem to remember hearing that the family involved shopped around until they found both a pathologist that was willing to say it was murder (who's name and accreditation I can't immediately find), and in the same time frame, a lawyer who focused on black civil rights.  They held a number of press conferences as well as a sit-in protest in front of the court house with signs demanding 'justice'.

My opinion at the time was that they were looking for the money angle, and trying to somehow, desperately, play the race card.  I felt vindicated when they later sued the funeral home for stuffing the empty body with newspaper, after a review board found no fault with the funeral home.

My big takeaway is simplistic;  they're angry they don't have anyone to blame so they'll lash out at everyone around them, and at least a few of the players have been energized by the thought that there's a racial element or money to be made.  When you're angry, everyone else is to blame, and when there's a pro-bono civil rights lawyer taking on the case for you, anyone with money is a preferred target.
