So you're wandering along on a dark, foggy evening and you see a sign warning of a cliff ahead. Do you:

A) Turn around and head the other way?

or

B) Continue on your merry way and hope the fall doesn't kill you?

I have definite opinions on the subject, but keep mum when it comes up in mixed company of not especially politically involved people, so as not to sway whatever opinion the person/s are about to share.

It's amazing how few people I've encountered that buy into the "A" component of AGW, especially given the hard sell that's been going on for the last 20 years.

There really isn't any scientific doubt that the Earth is getting warmer, dangerously so. The rate is accelerating. And most if not all of it is due to human activity.

2) It's a natural cycle. Again, nope. The last 150 years or so is all explained by the increases in criterions greenhouse gases - CO2, CH4, NOX. Those increases are precisely tied to human activity
3) There's no evidence. Bullshiat. Bullshiat. Bullshiat. Direct measurements. Tree rings. Ice cores. Plant succession. Half a dozen others. The data are complete, robust and come from many sources.
4) It's a conspiracy. Grow the fark up
5) Climategate!!!! Yeah, remember what happened when the British investigated this? No meat. No scandal. No lies. No coverup. Just a bunch of butthurt Republicans and Koch whores who had the sads because the people they were harassing didn't wuv them.
6) Well, maybe there was. But there's a pause for 16 years. Only if you are a liar or completely ignorant. Cherry picking and throwing out standard statistical methods doesn't count.
7) It was cold this year where I lived. Colder than last year. But still warmer than just about any period we have records for. Meanwhile there were record heat waves all over the rest of the world. And the polar air we got meant it was terrifyingly warm in the Arctic.

You've only yourselves to blame.

When ever single solitary weather related event that comes along and gets attention on the news brings forward people to scream "OMG CLIMATE CHANGE!", people quit taking you seriously.

Just this past winter we had the climate change people sneering because people talked about the particularly cold winter, swearing that 'well we predicted cold winters all along', in the meantime, they could barely keep snow on the slopes in Russia for the Olympics, people were walking around like it was spring. We saw this same thing during the winter Olympics in Canada, lack of snow? Climate change of course. Now when we get more snow, well, we predicted that all along, climate change of course. I distinctly remember 'no snow in Canada, climate change!' then a few months later 'massive snow in united states, that's just weather you idiots!'

10 to 15 years ago, the 'climate change' people were swearing that we would have no snow by this point. Right. They were also predicting hundreds of thousands of climate change refuges by now. Where are they?

You want climate change to be taken seriously? Then quit trying to hijack it for your own personal political agendas because people have seen through that ploy and now they don't pay any attention to the actual science. Hilariously, you're the other side of the coin from the creationists... They dismiss science where you grossly exaggerate it.

This.

Seriously guys, if you think humans haven't affected the Earth's ecosystem even after presented with peer reviewed research on the subject, you deserve to deep fry in 2070.  There is absolutely no doubt that humans have affected the Earth's climate through man-made activities.  The only doubt left remaining are the inconsistencies in how soon we are farked.

We're already past the point of no return.  It isn't a question of if we'll see major global changes but when.   The only thing we can do as a species to mitigate the effects is to continue to cut down on the amount of damage we're doing every year to the environment.

Humans are the only species on Earth with the capacity to completely fark up the entire ecosystem, and we've done a damn good job of it thus far.

Also, based on the data I've collected over the past six hours, we'll hit absolute zero in 7 days... which statement is just as immediately unprovable as any other.

Gas analysis from ice cores suggests a similar change in atmospheric content to what we're seeing today, and cycles of glaciation have been fairly predictable in the past. There's also evidence to suggest that the planet is still rising to its average temperature (and CO2 level) between glacial periods, and since we just got out of one that seems reasonable. Of course, since you can't prove a future event our very distant ancestors will have to draw the conclusions.

The real problem seems to be the same one I noticed in a philosophy class many years ago: when you expose someone to a pre-formed opinion they simply decide whether or not they agree with it, rather than thinking things through and coming up with their own. If they decide to agree with what someone else says it becomes part of how they define themselves and they'll fight to their last breath to avoid giving it up.

I don't care either way - it seems unlikely that humanity will survive to see the product or lack-thereof of its industrial efforts. But for crap's sake, people, your opinions are not who you are. They're just applied to the surface.

/Futility is my interglacial name.

Just for fun I paged through my old meteorology textbook from college recently (yes I have still have it - I paid good money for it).

Originally published in 1979 and reprinted in 1985, not a peep about AGW was made.  Acid rain and ozone destruction were given some mention, as those were the bringers of the End-Times back then.

The references to CO2s ability (along with esp. water vapor) to retain infra red light/heat was made only in positive terms, pointing out that without a greenhouse effect, we don't exist and aren't we lucky, etc.

Power plants account for 50+% of CO2 emissions, IIRC, so a phase out and conversion to nuclear would have a real impact relatively quickly.  That seems to be off the table however and is only enforceable outside the U.S. if you're ready to go to war (economic and otherwise) over it.

Limiting air travel could also be a quick way to have significant impact.

Live in Chicago and wanna see Paris?  Take a train to New York and get on a ship.  See you in two months.

A lot of people don't know what a petri dish is, or understand the concept of a closed ecosystem, so it's going to take a lot of education and effort to get them on-board. Unfortunately, for the empirically minded, there are folks who have a vested interest in continuing to pollute the earth, and they have a lot of money which they are using to convince people that everything is great.
We may, as a species, poison ourselves out of existence. Climate change may just smear our remains around.

Mr. Ekshun:

Uh... First guy's trolling.

Another word for lying; in this case, lying for spite.

Second guy's making obviously-unprovable assumptions.

And stating them as though they were fact. Therefore lying.

Third guy is conveying objective fact. It's happened before, both the temperature swings and the fact-conveyance.

...And with this, you're the fourth liar.
