Come on. The Russians have always been willing to throw a shoulder into a neighboring country - this is nothing new, and certainly not new in the Ukraine. Our option - our only option, whether this had happened yesterday or twenty years ago - is to get the rest of the world together and impose sanctions to calm them down.

How is that not an acceptable solution? Why the fark would you be willing to risk the entirety of the world over a dick measuring contest with Russia?

Or else, Tuesday.

FTA:

- Kerry said the U.S. and its European allies will not recognize (Crimea) as legitimate under international law

- The U.S. and Europe on Monday would then unite to impose sanctions on Russia

But if it isn't WWIII, it just isn't enough for the war hawks, right?

Preceding that was 8 years of Bush neo-con wars showing how "powerful" we were. At the absolute peak moment of America's d!ck swinging, Russia still did what it wanted.

Maybe the world doesn't revolve around the US and who is in the White House.

Giving in to kidnappers is always dangerous: those who fail to take a stand to start with often face graver trials later on.

Crimea seems inclined to turn eastward instead; and if its people voted for an orderly secession, it might well get the backing of the outside world. But the referendum that has been announced for March 16th is being held at the point of a Kalashnikov. Moreover, the justification Mr Putin claims for sending in troops is not Crimea's unique history, but the principle that the Kremlin has a duty to protect Russians and Russian-speakers wherever they may be-the logic that Hitler used when he seized parts of Europe in the 1930s. If the West implicitly accepts this line, Mr Putin will have a pretext for intervening to protect Russians scattered across the former Soviet Union, from Central Asia to the Baltic.

WWIII wont happen. It just wont. We are not going to get militarily involved. That is between the Ukraine and Russia. However, we will most likely implement sanctions, and it might not just be token sanctions. We need to tell them that the international community frowns on their shenanigans, and halting the purchase of Russian oil (beyond essential for their economic well being) might make them think twice.

Bush provided logistical support and flew combat ready Georgian soldiers from Afghanistan right after the invasion. Has obama offered logistical support? Cant even pass an aid bill since Reid attached IMF funding to it, despite a clean house bill.

Citation please. You wont find one. Polls have shown that military action in the Ukraine is not popular amongst the left or the right.

Anecdotal evidence isn't evidence

So McCain is acting a fool? The GOP always has a boner for war, sorry your party is so farked up.

Not everyone is a Democrat or a Republican. Its sad that people are so blinded by us v them that they forget that.

Since you wont provide a citation, I will provide one for my argument about support for war.

What's your point? The GOP and many conservatives have been saber rattling. If McCain, Graham, and Cheney don't represent the right wing dicks I'm talking about, no evidence will appease your desire to whitewash conservatives history of war mongering.

/I'm not a Democrat myself, that's not really relevant since liberals aren't saber rattling, are they?

I am not whitewashing history. I am talking about the Ukraine. That's been the only context that I was speaking of. How you got from A to B I don't know, but polls show that Americans really don't want war, left or right.

Yet prominent members of the  GOP and many of its supporters seem to want it. That link didn't break down the results either, but I'd assume people on the right are more inclined to get involved than moderates and liberals. Thank God a plurality of all sides are against intervention, Americans are sick of war.

Politicians don't always represent the will of the people. I haven't seen McCain talk about the Ukraine so I cant comment on what he said, but I will say that McCain has always been an opportunist moreso than a hard believer in ideology.

Fair enough, but to act like war hawks and neo cons aren't a part if the GOP base is kind of silly.

Oh I aint.

My message wasn't meant to be some sort of defense for the GOP. I was only bashing McCain and nothing else.

Winter's almost over in Europe, and if necessary, Germany can kick their nuclear plant back online.

Russia may well keep Crimea, but they're going to suffer for it for years to come. Economically and politically, this was a complete disaster for Russia.

Doesn't Norway more or less already export pretty much all of the excess to Europe right now? I don't know how they would be able to provide Europe with twice the amount if Russia shuts the pipelines off.

We can do exactly nothing about this without starting WWIII. Do you want to die so Sevastopol is still a city in Ukraine as opposed to Russia? No one does (with the exception of some people living there no doubt). Not sure what the west was expecting. Ever since we started marching NATO eastward while the Russians were weak post USSR we could expect them to act in a belligerent manner once they had regained some of their lost power. We pushed Russia away/down for so long instead of trying to incorporate them in the world system it was almost inevitable another strongman would come along to try and regain former glory.
