Serious question, if Obama had "credibility", what would he be able to do that would prevent the Russians from seizing Crimea?

Why are you bringing rational discourse into an argument made from emotions?

Giving in to kidnappers is always dangerous: those who fail to take a stand to start with often face graver trials later on.

Crimea seems inclined to turn eastward instead; and if its people voted for an orderly secession, it might well get the backing of the outside world. But the referendum that has been announced for March 16th is being held at the point of a Kalashnikov. Moreover, the justification Mr Putin claims for sending in troops is not Crimea's unique history, but the principle that the Kremlin has a duty to protect Russians and Russian-speakers wherever they may be-the logic that Hitler used when he seized parts of Europe in the 1930s. If the West implicitly accepts this line, Mr Putin will have a pretext for intervening to protect Russians scattered across the former Soviet Union, from Central Asia to the Baltic.

Kerry responded carefully, saying "we have contingencies - we are talking through various options that may or may not be available."
"Our hope is not to create hysteria or excessive concern about that at this point in time," he said. "Our hope is to avoid that, but there's no telling that we can."

Just what the fark are you trying to say Kerry? Pull that cawk out of your mouth when trying to speak.

No I believe we are making the right choices and anyone that wants to take on Russia is a moron IMHO, but lets not kid ourselves.  Putin doesn't care and we aren't likely do do any deep sanctions because Europe isn't likely to back them due to the economic impact will take them and thus us into a recession.

Russia took Crimea because the port and there isn't jack anyone will or can do about it.  Even the Ukranian president said yesterday that they are not going to fight Russia over it because they would lose the entire country.  In the end Russia will have their port and in a few months this will likely be forgotten by the latest lost airplane/whatever story.

They're gonna have to wait awhile for that one, the US currently doesn't export ANY liquefied natural gas like the Russians have. The first  liquefaction plant isn't even coming on line until next year. Gonna be a cold winter in Europe I guess.

That's the thing. Putin knows the EU needs Russian oil and gas. Sanctions are going to be "The EU will no longer import anymore matryoshka dolls until Russia pulls it's forces out of Crimea."

Putin is working this whole thing like a boss. I wouldn't be surprised if he had a hand in the ousting of Yanukovych who shouldn't have even entertained getting cozy with the west.

Yeah, that's a legitimate election right there

The referendum is illegal to begin with since any votes of secession must be taken by Ukraine as a whole, (not just the breakaway region) as per the Ukrainian constitution.. and that's just setting aside the "influence" the Russian military presence will have on the vote (and the steadfast refusal to allow UN monitors).

When you say "Ukraine as a whole", who do you mean?  Do you mean the constitutionally elected, and then deposed, president Yanukovych and his government, or do you mean the unconstitutional government that took his place in Kiev?  If the protesters in Kiev had a right to topple the government there, then the people of Crimea most definitely have a right to do the same.

He's saying we aren't going to start WWIII over Ukraine, but that there will still be other consequences for the Russians, like sanctions, removal from the G8, and possibly a nice little proxy war to destroy the Russian economy in a money pit occupation. For an example, see: US in Afghanistan.

Fair enough point, but that still doesn't make the Crimea referendum legal.

Winter's almost over in Europe, and if necessary, Germany can kick their nuclear plant back online.

Russia may well keep Crimea, but they're going to suffer for it for years to come. Economically and politically, this was a complete disaster for Russia.

We're not going to do squat, and neither are the Germans. The rest of NATO is as deeply in debt as the US is. There are still a few people alive who remember Germany's last visit to the Ukraine. Putin has won this round.
