National Geographic did a crowd-source archaeology thing where you sign up and look at satellite pictures of Mongolia for Genghis Khan's tomb. I looked at a few dozen. So far I haven't heard that they ever found it.

Tomnod is a great resource.

When my friend and colleague Dale Smith and his family disappeared a few months ago in the Idaho wilderness, I spent several weeks combing through the tomnod images each night after work (along with many others). We finally found a particular area of interest and we got volunteers to fly around in their planes recording with goPro cameras, and then we started looking at that footage. Then we noticed a glint of a reflection that looked like possible metal, and the area was investigated on foot, and they found the crash site under snow, a few feet from the glint.  Dale's brother was the one to find them.

It's a great crowd-sourcing tool.

And Dale, we all miss you.

All the snark aside, at least this gives people an outlet for helping albeit perhaps not in a critical way.  Unlike the Boston thing, at least this way people can do a first filter and then others can do the real work.  This isn't a needle in a haystack, this is looking for one snowflake during a snowstorm. at night.
While my code builds, I can scan a few tiles and maybe help.  Keeps me out of the politics tab.  I think most people would call that a win.

The punchline "Hey, I found that missing jet!" as it's flown into a skyscraper sometime in the next 72 hours......

Why not!  What could it hurt?  At the rate things are going, they're going to try a bloodhound on a boat next.

Malaysian Investigator: "Smell anything boy?"
Bloodhound: "WOOF!"
Malaysian Investigator: "Now we're getting somewhere!"

The first night TomNod put up the imagery, I spent about 4 hours looking at grainy, blurry Vietnamese water.

I saw several white dots of varying sizes, four suspected boats (which I marked as "Other" so as to have some sense of accomplishment), and lots of pretty fluffy clouds.

This activity comes highly recommended for people who:

1) Like clouds
2) Like to play "Where's Waldo" with smeary blobs that look a bit like boats
3) Think they can spot a sunken airplane from orbit through cloud cover

It turns out that while I like clouds, I don't like them quite enough to qualify for #1, and I don't at all fit in with the demographic for #2 or #3.

Too bad they can't release all the image data or an API that can fetch it in blocks. I already have custom OCR software that scans images for whatever I need to find. It wouldn't take much to filter out the noise and find images with the most scattered white dots.

I had that problem when I first visited the site. Takes a few refreshes for everything to load correctly for some reason. Its working right now on my end. Could be a DNS issue or they're getting hit to hard.
