She is for drug legalisation while abstaining from their use herself?

2014-03-13 10:55:34 AM
The widow of the late Jack Layton. Wildly popular in Toronto as was Jack Layton. Former Toronto City Council member. (Now) former MP.

On paper, this should be a blowout.

2014-03-13 10:59:43 AM
Damn! I'm gonna miss that guy.

2014-03-13 10:59:48 AM
The mayor of Toronto, huh?  This is one race where I'll be on the edge of my seat.

2014-03-13 11:00:13 AM
Olivia Chow? she's gonna eat that crackhead for breakfast.

2014-03-13 11:00:23 AM
We'll see about that. I'm not sure Rob Ford's base of support in the conservative Toronto suburbs has eroded much.

2014-03-13 11:01:42 AM
crack smokes her?

2014-03-13 11:02:09 AM
If Rob Ford wins (which he probably won't), can I make Marion Barry jokes again?

2014-03-13 11:04:13 AM
I hope his concessions speach provides us as much entertainment as his time in office did. Im picturing a Chris Farley heart attack type scene.

2014-03-13 11:05:28 AM
Good, she was a terrible transportation critic. Didn't know bugger all about aviation.

2014-03-13 11:06:40 AM
Her name is Chow but does she "have plenty to eat at home"?

If she's gonna fill Rob Ford's shoes,

SNL's gonna need some new cast members.

I assume "Transportation Critic" is something like the shadow Minister of Transportation or other opposition figure in charge of transportation?

2014-03-13 11:08:55 AM
Geez, subby, how did you get that headline out of "Click here (and fix your browser's Javascript settings) if you are not redirected to your destination within 3 seconds..."?

His exact opposite? So she's a teetotalling, skinny, lesbian?

2014-03-13 11:11:08 AM
Is that Dr. Cox to her left?

2014-03-13 11:11:19 AM
Meaning she'll ignore all constituent complaints and spend more money than Toronto takes in?

2014-03-13 11:11:38 AM
So... boring?

2014-03-13 11:11:48 AM
Hero tag for Olivia Chow?  No thanks.

I remember her on the Police Services board.  She did absolutely everything she could to tie the hands of officers trying to do their jobs and survive.

2014-03-13 11:11:54 AM
Does Canada have anything like SuperPACs?  Ford could raise a fortune from comedians all over the world.

2014-03-13 11:12:33 AM
She injects heroin?  And a pre-op trans woman? (that picture: the goggles do nothing).

I always question the use of the term "polar opposite". Both of the poles (the Arctic and Antarctica) have cold barren dessert like conditions, both are in large part inhabitable aside from research scientists and adventurers, both have some unique wildlife found nowhere else on earth.

The term demonstrates more similarities than differences. Just my $0.02.

qorkfiend: We'll see about that. I'm not sure Rob Ford's base of support in the conservative Toronto suburbs has eroded much.

Despite Ford being kinda racist, he had high levels of support among suburban minorities. Given Toronto's high Asian demographic, she might get some of that back.

ertai_lapis: I assume "Transportation Critic" is something like the shadow Minister of Transportation or other opposition figure in charge of transportation?

You are correct.

Chow has a bit of a Hillary Clinton thing going for her, however - there are people that just hate hate hate hate her no matter what she does or says. I hope that's enough of a minority to not screw this up for her.

2014-03-13 11:15:04 AM
Mayor is fine, she would be very good at it. However if the NDP were ever elected as the Canadian national government we would be bankrupt within 5 years... The policies could not work in the long run.

I am a center left Canadian, which makes me a Commie in the US.

Dr Jack Badofsky: Is that Dr. Cox to her left?

Whoever it is he goes to the same place that Rand Paul gets his discount hair pieces.

2014-03-13 11:16:35 AM
Maybe he will move to Montreal and run.  Always thought that he would be a better fit as mayor of that city.

You don't get to run one candidate versus another, otherwise she would clearly win.

What you will have is 5 or 6 solid candidates.  Rob Ford gets 30% minimum (seriously).  If the other candidates strip away more than 20% of the popular vote, he wins.

imontheinternet: Does Canada have anything like SuperPACs?  Ford could raise a fortune from comedians all over the world.

Funding will have little to do with it.  Rob Ford supporter/haters are both hardcore.  The only factor will be how many votes Chow will lose to alternate candidates.  More than 20% and she will probably lose.

Rixel: Who am I kidding....if he loses, Sun News will give him 2 columns and 5 hours a week.

Eh, they already gave him a tv show.  It lasted half an episode, if I remember.

I hope Chow wins so badly, if only to see what colour Ford's face can turn.

Should be, but Ford still has the 'burbs in his corner.  All it would take is a few "Fark Metro" promises and the fat man is back in.

I was figuring on a religious nut. She doesn't seem that way from the first time knowledge of her from the article.
So...

Citation please. This isn't an 'merikun election where knee-jerks lies can be pulled from one's buttocks & tossed into the ring as facts.

Whoa. I'd never actually considered it that way, and that sounds like exactly my vein of sarcastic comment. Fortunately I have absolutely no qualms stealing that line of thought for the future.

Of course, I always figured it was in relation to magnets.

Munchkin City Coroner: Geez, subby, how did you get that headline out of "Click here (and fix your browser's Javascript settings) if you are not redirected to your destination within 3 seconds..."?

I got that earlier from a WaPo article linked here on Fark. I'm assuming this has something to do with Fark's redirect thingie and not the CBC (or WaPo). Perhaps Drew and the boys are fiddling with something again.

You do realize that a) that the term "polar" or "poles" is a scientific term describing electromagnetic phenomena and b) that the North and South poles are thusly named because of their opposite magnetic properties and c) when the term "polar opposites" is being used as a figurative descriptor it is referring to the electromagnetic phenomena, not the geographic wastelands that surround our planet's magnetic poles... right?

Of course you do. Because you're smarter than that.

They were paying market rent in a co-op building that also included low-income subsidied housing, the way just about every co-op does.  This was already dealt with in the past.

I don't don't like everything she stands for but she is good at working with people.  City council will work better with someone that isn't an obstructionist in every way.

Not now but I was for years, and that was during the Mel Lastman era so I think I've earned the right to shiat on the politicians of my choice.

I'd rather the people fed, educated, and happy with a bankrupt government, than the other way around.

This has been proven false over and over again.

I find it amusing that the Canuckian Conservobot shills have even invaded Fark.

For those who want to see some REAL and BLATANT shilloids at work, the likes of which American Republicans would DREAM of having on their payroll read the article comments. They have standing marching orders to completely pollute the CBC boards with their nonsense. You can even see multiple posters using the same talking points almost word for word.

lol... Canadians.
