Spending a bunch doesn't equal wins

steamingpile: Spending a bunch doesn't equal wins

This. If money equaled wins, we'd be talking about the Redskins dynasty right now.

Also, we're talking about Cleveland and Oakland. It doesn't matter how much they spend, they'll still probably suck.

This thread is probably as good as any:

Darren Sproles goes to Philly. For (reportedly) a 5th-round pick.

Just as a summary of the Philly offense right now: D-Jax, Jeremy Maclin, Riley Cooper, Shady McCoy, Sproles, Zach Ertz, Brent Celek, Nick Foles, and one of the best o-lines in the NFL. Chip Kelly must be laughing like an evil genius at this moment.

(Now, if only the defense could stop anyone...)

Wait, did they manage resigning all of their receivers?

Yup. Ask Denver how things work out when you've got a world-class offense and swiss-cheese defense. Now Denver is out making big free-agent signings on defense, because their Super Bowl window closes when Manning retires.

For the Eagles, Malcolm Jenkins will help, but it's hard to say how much. I expect the Eagles to go heavily for defense in the draft--the mock drafts I've seen have them taking DBs in the first two rounds. They'll still have to score big to win in the regular season, and that's not a road map for winning in the playoffs. But their games will be fun to watch.

Everyone except Avant, who got released. And I imagine that there's going to be a WR pickup in the draft, given the depth there this year.

They signed Cooper and Maclin. Jackson is still under contract. IIRC, They released Jason Avant.

They also locked up two of their O-linemen with long-term deals.

Wow, I'm impressed.

Also, is that the last active WR from the UoM receivers of 05?

Braylon Edwards - FA
Breaston-FA
Avant - visiting patriots
Mario manningham - ...still on SF for now

The talent on that roster was absurd, no wonder people thought henne was good

2014-03-13 09:55:17 AM
Nope, manningham is a FA.
Who'd athunk avant would've been the last

Well we don't really know that yet do we? Sure they look like they're making good moves right now. I'm sure they thought drafting Trent Richardson, Brandon Weinke, and JaMarcus Russell were all good moves, too.

Why don't we just wait and see if these actually are good moves before giving two awful franchises the benefit of the doubt?

That's OK.  We'll wait.

The 49'ers TRADED for Blaine Gabbert? Only a sixth round draft pick, but still, whoa! Harbaugh is a good quarterback coach, he helped Alex Smith a great deal..........but Blaine Gabbert? Last year was supposed to be his breakout year, and he posted a 36.0 QB rating, with 1 td and 7 picks.

Instead, the third day of free agency is the place where the Jets make bad decisions.  Five years, $36.25 million for Eric Decker.  Even if only $15 million of that is guaranteed that's still ridiculous.

As Jets fan, I like the signing as it will give Geno someone to throw to but I don't like the money so much. Decker isn't a umber 1 WR and isn't close to being worth that much money.

That said, I can totally see the Jets trying (and failing) to move up to get Watkins in the draft. They'll also probably (hopefully) get either Lee from USC or Evans from A&M. So, god willing, Decker won't have to be the number 1 WR for too long.

Here's your fun fact of the day: If Gabbert threw the ball at his own feet every single play, his passer rating would be higher than it was.

It's still a place to watch Oakland fall flat on their face, despite having $60 million in cap space, though

I was laughing at Oakland when Vehldeer signed with AZ and they signed Saffold to a larger deal...which later fell through because he could pass a physical. How very Raiders.

...and even though he's the obvious backup with no chance at starting, he's making over 2x what Kaepernick is.

Rumors and whispers are heard in SF that Kaep's going to hold out.

Steve Smith has been released by the Panther's.  I don't understand the NFL today.

JusticeandIndependence: Steve Smith has been released by the Panther's.  I don't understand the NFL today.

They had to pay him $7M to keep him. By cutting him, they're still forced to pay him $3M of that, but they're saving $4M in cap space. He's 34, they figure they can get a suitable replacement for less and use the leftover to sign another player.

It's like the Ravens did after the Super Bowl -- did they WANT to lose Boldin? Of course not. But he was owed something like $7-8M, and they didn't think he was worth that, so instead of cutting him and hoping to re-sign for cheaper they got some draft picks out of SF, who was willing to absorb that contract in return for his services.

San Diego - signed running back Donald Brown (Colts) to a three-year, $10.5 million deal.

Otherwise known as God Dammit Donald

Can Kaep even renegotiate his contract yet? I remember people saying similar things about Russell Wilson, but the CBA prevents renegotiating rookie contracts up to a certain point.

Kaep is at that point now.  Wilson hits it next year.

Philly fans learned nothing from The Dream Team.
