What's the over-under on it being an elderly person that relied on Apple Maps mistaking a crowd of people for a farmer's market?

What an awful thing to have happen. I dislike SXSW because it screws up my commute and I really hate all the outsiders clogging everything up, but I wouldn't wish this on anyone.

I'm really surprised this sort of thing doesn't happen more often. Especially in Texas.

Because people are drunken barely-sane idiots and many of them have quick access to multi-ton vehicles, that's why. And Texans drive even bigger ones and are even more drunken and barely-sane.

"pt" is "Patient" in EMS speak.

Red is critical injuries that are labeled as trauma system entries. You know on the ER shows when someone comes into the hospital and 3 doctors and about 10 nurses/techs descend on them? That's a trauma system entry.

Green is minor/non-trauma.

DOS is Dead on Scene.

it's Texas, you know, where "affluenza" is a viable defense.

Yeah. They're saying the media point of contact, Public Information Officer, is available to speak at 9th and Red River. Total transported patients are 23: 5 of which were immediate/critically ill, 13 green - or walking wounded, 5 were delayed/not as critically ill, and two were dead on scene during triage.

Yep. Downtown Austin is full of drunk drivers on a normal night. Throw in tens of thousands of festival goers who have been drinking all day and dozens of roadblocks and detours in a city that already has screwed up traffic, and you're asking for trouble.

If that's true, it's the dumbest move they could possibly make. With capital murder, you have to prove intent to kill. At best, they'll file felony evading arrest and intoxicated manslaughter.

Apparently they have witnesses and evidence that this wasn't just a drunk guy who was blitzed, but that he intended to go out and kill as many people as possible.

As someone who has a hard time controlling alcohol intake, this is one of the things that has kept me from driving my whole life.

This really sucks, and I wish anything I could say could make it any better.

Motherfarker, really?

inclemency: Motherfarker, really?

At least according to rumors from social media and witnesses on scene, the guy sped up and intentionally tried to hit as many people as possible.

The capital murder reference may be to felony murder (which I am not fond of; neither the act, obviously, nor the charge, which just seems wrong to my internal sense of justice).  Perhaps they believe the alleged perp was already committing a felony before plowing into the crowd.  I'm guessing that in Texas that would make it a capital crime.

2014-03-13 04:02:18 AM
I just found out what SXSW was yesterday, because Adam Carolla's podcast from yesterday was recorded in it. I also just came to Fark because Drew Curtis is on his podcast today and I wanted to see if there was a fark post about it yet. Coincidence? ALIENS?

Texas has a specific definition for Capital Murder separate from First Degree Murder. Capital Murder would make the accused eligible to receive the death penalty in Texas. It's more along the lines of what other states would call First Degree with Special Circumstances.
