Nice job, linking to an article that's subscription-only.

Found these quotes here:  http://www.thehindu.com/news/international/world/missing-plane-may-ha v e-flown-for-hours-says-report/article5779653.ece :

Quoting two people briefed on details sourced from engine data transmitted from the Boeing 777, the Wall Street Journal reported the plane "stayed in the air for about four hours past the time it reached its last confirmed location, ... raising the possibility that the plane could have flown on for hundreds of additional miles under conditions that remain murky."

Malaysian officials said the plane lost contact with air traffic control around one hour after taking off from Kuala Lumpur early on Saturday, over the Gulf of Thailand, where search efforts have been, so far, been concentrated.

But the  Wall Street Journal said U.S. counterterrorism officials were now "pursuing the possibility that a pilot or someone else on board the plane may have diverted it toward an undisclosed location after intentionally turning off the jetliner's transponders to avoid radar detection".

--

So then. This just gets stranger.

They're officially calling this lead a bust. The mystery continues.

no kidding boats and planes searched that area the day those pictures were taken

maybe now everyone can stop believing the prick that produced an email showing he told his boss he watched the plane crash and just happened to list the exact coordinates that the pictures showed

you know the email the one he wrote 5 days AFTER the crash around the time this lead popped up

while some may call the malay incompetent at least the airline does not post this kind of thing until it is confirmed

This is what I don't get. If the plane crashed, the ELT beacons in them are built to the same standard the black boxes are. Why would there be no ELT signal?

It didn't crash - it was stolen. The transponders were all turned off in flight. Look at the pilot's youtube videos - he's hacking all his appliances. Both pilots were unmarried and unattached and maybe willing to disappear.

i vaguely remember that the night this happened one of the first aviation experts for this type of plane mentioned the transponders could be turned off/disabled from the cockpit so best thing is to wait until something is in hand before people starting screaming we found it

if people follow the press releases they would have read that the airline is requesting for the sake of the people they are trying to find let them concentrate on the search efforts instead of having to spend so much time debunking rumors

too many people are already shouting coverup, conspiracy, and incompetence on the part of the governments to realize that the two biggest search teams are multinational buddhist NGO's (where i got the "harsh" statement that the email guy could have gone to the SAR office in person or called the SAR group directly) instead of wasting time like today

and the pilot supposedly had his own flight simulator at home

no  matter how disgusting it may be it is still a strong possibility the plane was stolen/hijacked but we wont know until they find something

At this point, they're mostly dead.

TommyDeuce: gweilo8888: while the sea in that area is quite shallow, it's not shallow enough to see man-made objects sitting on the bottom with standard photography.

It may not be all that deep there, and something fairly big and white would show up to a pretty good depth - depending on sea state.  Probably not much for visible pollution that far from shore.

Wow, way to rebut me by just saying "Nuh uh!"

...or it could be the pain killers talking

IF they had actually found it in the satellite pic the first day, then they've had 3 days to send their own damn plane/boat out to confirm and/or collect debris. That way they could have said 'hey, look what our technology can do..... we saw it and got to it first.'.

You really think a military that has run over its own unarmed university students with tanks couldn't/wouldn't shoot down an airliner if they felt like it?

Why?

That's just ridiculous. Do you think Michael Jordan has a basketball hoop at his house? Of course not. Who practices their job for fun?
