Gonna be a bad years for Da Bears. At least it will make my kid (the GB fan) really happy.

I am actually looking forward to the Bears this year - they dropped deadweight and passed their prime players (like Hester and Peppers) They have an explosive offense and if there is any adjustment to improve the D the division is easily attainable.

/can't believe I just typed those words about the Bears O and D

With this news plus the fact that the Lions just signed Golden Tate, its a good day.

Good for him getting paid.  If he sticks there for both years he'll make more than he had in his entire career to this point.

Good for McCown, but subby is farking nuts.

Where's Joey Harrington when you need him?...

Good for him for getting paid, and good for the Bears for not overpaying. And he's not going to TB to be a backup, he'll "win" the job.

Charles Tillman is reportedly visiting TB, as well.

Along with Hester and Melton.

Should be an interesting Bears-Bucs game in this coming regular season, oui?

Tampa had plenty of problems last year.  I really don't think QB play was near the top of the list, at least not as the year progressed

So, a veteran backup had a few good games while playing for a coach with a reputation for getting the most out of his QBs?  Sure, sounds like he's worth $10 mil.  If someone's willing to pay him, good for him.  The Bears made the right decision and I wish him nothing but the best.

PS, I'm available to hold a clipboard for only $9 mil.

I always liked Lovie, and by all accounts his players are crazy loyal. Hester credits Lovie for his entire career.

Pretty sure he's still in Skokie:

He did go to Florida to die, however.

You gotta burn all the old players out back and bring in fresh ones to get that Schiano stench out of there. Its highly contagious so best be safe

If TB's offense becomes anything like Chicago's offense under Lovie, QB play will always be a problem.

Electromax: Hester credits Lovie for his entire career.

I credit (former Bears special teams coordinator, now in KC) Dave Toub myself, and discount Lovie and (former Bears GM) Angelo for thinking Hester was a receiver.

Meh. M-e-h. We can't even say he's better than Glennon.

Obviously the Bears weren't going to pay him after blowing all that money on Cutler, so they don't really get a gold star for doing the correct thing either.

Get ready for severe clock mismanagement and calling timeouts because the QB doesn't have the play before the playclock winds down.

Freeman was yelling at the sideline to get the farking play in. And yes there were timeouts for Tampa last year because the inept coaching staff coudln't get the play in.

I think it's smart though, as they won't have to waste a high pick for a qb who can start.

I'm pretty sure Glennon still has the starting QB job in the bag. This smells like one of those "oh, we just want to give the young gun some 'competition' and 'leadership'".

Or Lovie Smith is a goddamn farking idiot and actually thinks stunting the development of a decent young QB in favor of someone who will be 35 by the season starts is an excellent decision for a team that still has a ways to go until becoming a bona fide contender.

Shame Us: Smith was quoted today saying that McCown is his QB, though they may draft one.

McCown was a meh-to-awful QB his whole career but fell into a nice situation in Chicago with a borderline genius with QBs in Trestman. Glennon is just starting his career and did pretty well working with, by the end of the season, I think their 14th string RB due to injuries and no offensive genius in sight.

Okay then.

2014-03-12 06:22:02 PM
Actually, I shouldn't say "borderline" genius; Trestman's reputation is strong enough to say he has an excellent offensive mind particularly with QB development.

At the end of the day, the Bears DID make the right call.

Cutty has WAY more years in him and is still teachable-- his numbers this year have been his best to date (still not at what we'd call "great" but he's above average).  He knows how to throw to more than one player and his O line is the best in, well, ever.

Now, if he farks up this year and injures himself AGAIN, I'm going to have to stop my eternal optimism for the guy.  I'm a lone voice among many fans in liking the guy, because I think he's very smart and very accurate  when he's coached well.

I wish McCown the best-- his bizarre anti-pornography crusade will work well in Florida.

I've always thought Jay was a good QB. it's just that Jerry Angelo never bothered to build the offense around him and he struggled mightily for it. Now that the pieces have been coming together on offense (o-line is functional, two TWO! solid options at receiver, and a tight end without stone hands who trips over his own shadow), we've finally begun to see the level at which he can play.

Lone?  I think not!

I think he brings a lot of the hate on himself for his demeanor, which he's worked to improve, and because the Chicago media needs a scapegoat - and when they know the goat won't defend itself they go for the jugular.  I completely agree that when he's coached well, he plays well.

When I'm depressed, sometimes I watch the clip on youtube of Jay telling Martz to go fark himself before heading to the line after the huddle.  Good times.

By the time they got to Tice, Cutty just ignored him.  Smartest move he could do with a guy like that.

And yes, praise be to Martellus at TE.  And he's a hoot on twitter.

Any fan of a team that's had a history of godawful quarterbacks like the Bears have had is in no position to biatch about Cutler.

Up until this year the Bears' career passing yardage leader was still Sid Luckman.

So yeah, I'll take a somewhat-above-average-when-healthy QB considering what the alternatives have been over the years.

Same idea as when Hasselbeck was here in Seattle. We had been beaten into submission by the likes of Rick Mirer, Stan Gelbaugh, Dan McGwire, Jon Freisz, Kelly Stouffer, Trent Dilfer, etc. Matt Hasselbeck looked like a goddamn hall of famer by comparison.

Cutler is a mediocre malcontent with a weak arm and, quite possibly, a vagina.

Enjoy your 8-8 with the best tandem receivers in the game.

Bears will not win their division in 2014.

the weird thing about the Bears is the '85 Bears were one of the higher scoring teams of all time, part of that is simply the dominating defense not giving the opposing offense any chance and of course turnovers, but the offense was revving pretty high as well all year

the '84 Bears and '86 Bears defense played just as well as the '85 Bears defense, but they didn't have the offense to match the defense

Cutler needs to stay healthy, as long as he stays healthy he'll only get better with Trestman, plus you can't go wrong with Marshall, Bennett and Jeffrey

In case you haven't noticed, quite a lot of us enjoy talking about the business end of football, and what players go to what team and make what impact.

Or, you know...you could talk about the paralympics or some shiat.  Or gtfo, that works too.
