If the conservatives were listening to other ideas, they wouldn't keep trying the same failed ones. I love it when they turn around and accuse everyone else of being what they are, like some lunatic screaming "I'M NOT THE MAD ONE, YOU'RE MAD, YOU'RE ALL MAD, HAHAHAHAHA!!" as they're put into the padded cell.

GOP candidates need to stop letting the media define them as anti women, to paint them with out of context sound bites.  The only way for this to happen is for every GOP candidate to discuss rape and women's issues every chance they get.  They need to talk about what sex acts are really rape, what clothing choices constitute consent, when pregnancy can really occur, and everything else about anatomy and rape.  If they remain silent the media will define their positions and paint a negative picture of them.

gnosis301: Wasn't there a news story yesterday about conservative women decrying this sort of shiat?

Point of order: that lady at CPAC wasn't 'decrying' this sort of shiat - she was just telling the menfolk to stop saying it out loud where voters could hear.

She didn't say "don't say this stuff even in private", or "don't say this stuff at all", or "don't think about women like this", or even "don't think that wife-beating is funny".  For that matter, she didn't even say that the conservative women shouldn't say things like this.

And given conservatives ideas of 'reforming' their message, I have to think that last one was what she really meant.  She was just telling male republicans to not spew this shiat or to actually change their ways - she was just pointing out a belief that it'll go over better coming out of a woman's mouth.

A co-worker told me that same joke a year or two ago...I laughed at the time.  I told it to my wife that evening...she laughed and groaned at the same time.

It's the kind of joke that you'd tell to an audience of one or two friends...you know it's inappropriate, but the thought of a woman dipped in beer-batter makes it funny.

However, when you broadcast it to a wide audience, no one will acknowledge thinking it's funny, because at that level, you're not dipping a woman into batter, your making fun of a very large group of mostly-helpless victims.

Their legislative chamber has a LOT of reps compared to their population. They have 400 reps and only 1.3 million people. So even if they just had the normal percentage of potato-americans (which they dont), the raw numbers in the legislature would still be high.

I saw the pic -I get the "eating" reference, though not the "plain" part- but what does one clause even have to do with the other? Why would the number make any difference? Is this a joke, or a political statement, or a word salad?

It is a play on the word "battered," having a dual meaning of a treatment for food and a victim of domestic violence. 50,000 puts it into context of the number of battered women... I'm guessing in the state, which furthers the contrast of those two terms.

It's a generally inappropriate play on words that, when worded and delivered correctly, can be amusing outside of mixed company, but when you're a lawmaker who has to deal with that very problem, half of your constituents are women, and you're calling attention to the fact that the number of abused women in your state is three times larger than the population of my hometown, It is grossly inappropriate. It's like how some "dead baby" jokes can be stupid but amusing, but you don't farking tell them to anyone who actually lost a baby, and you don't tell them when making policy on prenatal care availability.

2014-03-12 10:16:03 AM
I like the way these guys always complain about people calling them out when they make jokes like this. Republicans never seem to understand why some people can get away with these type of jokes but they can't. First off, if the joke is actually funny a lot of people will actually let it slide it it is offensive. Secondly when people know that you aren't being serious and you are telling your joke as part of a bigger point that later denounces the idea of your joke, they don't complain about it. Republicans don't understand this. They don't seem to understand that the rhetoric they spew and their actions lead people to believe that they hate women, so people will get offended with them telling jokes about battered women when those same people might not get offended when other groups do.

You just dismissed republican wins as "because more people are stupid these days"

Democrats are in for a serious loss this year -- the senate is all but gone

Telling people they are dumb is not gonna win hearts and minds -- and ob top of it: they aren't dumb -- they just believe this country is on the wrong track and are willing to accept someone making a bad joke (which plenty of us do all the time) to correct the perceived consistently poor direction of the country

/doesn't believe the country is going in the wrong direction

The middle joke is pretty overly farking dark, but the first and third directly related to actual things that have happened and can legitimately be poked fun at because, among other reasons, there is no "victim" besides the asshole embarrassed by causing the situation.

keithgabryelski: doyner: The fact that these clowns continue to win elections is pretty representative of the debasing nature of their base.

//but a senate takeover by republicans will be unpleasant

You got the wrong idea then.  I'm not dismissing wins at all.  I'm describing them.

And sure, it's not looking good for the Dems despite the nature of teir opposition.

But which hearts and minds am I trying to "win?"  The kind of folks that vote for guys like this? Really?  Sure, they believe the country is on the wrong track, but does that mean that the solution is to foist the likes of teabaggers, misogynists, chickenhawks, racists, and corporate shills on us?  And sure, it may be a "bad joke," but consider this: When your party is wounded because of its image vis-a-vis women and minorities, why give guys like this a pass when breathlessly criticizing Obama for things like arugula?

Again, I'm talking about the BASE here.

Obviously "the debasing nature of their base" does not equal "because more people are stupid these days." It's not even close to meaning that.

Politicians, for the most part, aren't funny.  Some of them have good writers, and a few are good writers (Senator Franken comes to mind).  But I think all of them could benefit from the policy that you shouldn't make jokes about a victimized population unless you're part of that population.

Dudes yukking it up in public about domestic violence is iffy but even worse when it is an elected official.

New Hampshire's House of Reps has 400 members, each representing about 3000 people in total. They each get paid $100/year to be a Representative. As you can imagine - a lot of Crazy and Stupid comes out of the woodwork when tiny districts elect folks from the small pool of people willing to volunteer their time.

Bloody William: Millennium: You know, even when I don't think a joke is funny, I can usually at least figure out the line of thought that led to someone trying to tell it as a joke. This one, I can't follow at all.

This right here.

I get the joke...but goddamn, what's good for Doug Stanhope or Jackie Martling isn't good for ANYONE in any position of power.

I think the jokes is hilarious.  But I'm not going to share it tonight with my class full of college kids.  You see, when you grow up, us adults have to learn there are appropriate times, places and audiences for these sorts of jokes.  The basis of these jokes is that abusing women can be funny.  So when I crack these jokes, I crack them only with a private audience that I know damn well also would find them humorous.

You SHOULD be outraged that this guy apparently thinks abused women is such a non-issue that publicly joking about it is acceptable and funny.

Here's the thing that some people are having to understand:
It's a stupid joke, regardless of who made it.
It's a stupid joke to MAKE for a politician period.
It's an especially stupid joke to make for a politician in a party that's been under heavy fire on woman's issues for years now.

Bloody William: It's a generally inappropriate play on words that, when worded and delivered correctly, can be amusing outside of mixed company, but when you're a lawmaker who has to deal with that very problem, half of your constituents are women, and you're calling attention to the fact that the number of abused women in your state is three times larger than the population of my hometown, It is grossly inappropriate. It's like how some "dead baby" jokes can be stupid but amusing, but you don't farking tell them to anyone who actually lost a baby, and you don't tell them when making policy on prenatal care availability.

Bloody William: Millennium: You know, even when I don't think a joke is funny, I can usually at least figure out the line of thought that led to someone trying to tell it as a joke. This one, I can't follow at all.

Maybe you should adjust your purple skirt, hitch up your garter belt, and accept that some jokes are inappropriate based on the context of who says them, to whom they're directed, and how the joke-teller actually affects the subject of the joke as a policy-maker. If you have time to tampon-up in between looting stores when the lights go out and doing crack on the street while beating up white kids.

No. The joke (regardless who tells it) isn't that someone beats a woman before oral sex. The joke is funny because the teller mistakes battered for being fried. It's silly, It's sexy, and plays on  teller being a bit ignorant.  It's offensive because we're not supposed to laugh at anything involving domestic abuse and implies the teller may be indifferent to such a reprhensable act.. The joke doesn't imply  the teller actually prefers to beat woman.

/jokes suck when you have to explain why they are funny.

Going to have to disagree here. I don't think that is the implication. It is a play on the word battered and it's two meanings. It is unacceptable but, in my opinion, claiming the implication is "I like to beat my women before performing oral sex on them" is a huge reach.

It is a dumb joke and given the myriad of dumb things Republicans have said he is an idiot for posting it because the least offensive interpretation of it makes light of the fact that women are physically abused.

grumpyguru: Especially since jokes like this generally come from sites whose users claim to lean left on the political scare (i.e. 4chan, Reddit, eBaum's World, etc.)

....wtf are you smoking? Do you have proof that 4chan, Reddit and eBaum's World (seriously, is that even around still?) are left leaning?

Wow, what goes through a GOP mind?  Anything?

Perfect example!  Larry here tells bad-taste jokes all the time, he is offensive, childish, and terrible and we laugh and laugh all the time!  How does he do it?  The answer is simple enough, he follows through.  "Lord, I apologize, and be with the starvin' Pygmies down there in New Guinea. Amen." That simple catch-phrase of mild self-deprecation is all it takes.

No it's not a perfect example.  On one hand you have a "redneck" comedian and on the other a State Representitive.   No amount of "I'm sorry" should be enough he should be let go of his position.  When you are in a position of power like that you can not post shiat like that on your wall.   I'm sure we'll get the old "I was hacked" excuse.

I agree.  It shouldn't be surprising that we should hold elected politicians who represent a wide variety of voters to a higher standard than "redneck" comedians.  Apparently to some it is.

Nah.  I bet we'll get the "I'm sorry if I offended anyone/I'm sorry you were offended (but I'm not sorry I did it)."

Cletus C.: He should be fried for that.

I think I see what you did there.
