Oh deer. What a doggone mess.

And other woodland puns.

The comments for that article are absolutely idiotic. So many comments about euthanizing the dogs and asking why the dogs were out without the owner. Guess people don't realize that deer will do a hell of a job on a fence especially if they are scared. I have friends who are constantly repairing their fences because of deer.

farking dogs don't know how to make a clean kill. You ever wonder why ranchers shoot them on sight? You would not believe what a mess a pack of stray dogs can make out of a herd of sheep.

Simple solution.  Don't close the school.  Give the first three kids to show up mops.  The next three get to set chairs and whatnot back up.  The seventh kid through the doors gets to tell everyone what the mystery meat for the day is in the cafeteria.

What I want to know is what they did with all that venison. Did those poor deer suffer for nothing?

I'm actually surprised the dogs could catch a healthy deer. Deer are faster than dogs and can jump higher, and outmaneuver them. And the fastest dogs, like say a greyhound, couldn't kill a deer. .

Better yet just squeegee the whole mess into the biology classroom and make a day of it.

Yet. That's the difference between "stray" and "feral." After a couple generations "feral" becomes "wild" and they'll compete with coyotes. Hunting for food is a skill they learn when they have to, when they don't have much if anything to do with people.

Keep chasing them off and never feed them, they'll get like dingoes and eat your babies.

The generally don't go straight for a kill.  They nip at the ankles, harass, and slowly wear their prey down before finally going for the kill.

My assumption is that the deer were unable to process their surroundings well enough to escape once inside the school. The two dogs weren't stray, so they'd be pretty comfortable with the idea of indoors.

You're both probably right. From experience with my golden retriever, out in the woods, she would chase a deer and come back a few minutes later, panting and looking happy. She was fast in her younger years. I miss her.

Deer hooves would have no traction on indoor hard surface flooring.  Once inside they would have been easy pickings.

Plus, even if the deer were able to run around inside without being hampered by the inability to adjust to the surroundings, the hallways and rooms of a building are going to offer a lot more dead ends. They would most likely have to constantly stop or slow down to turn around, giving the dogs plenty of opportunities to strike.

i've been traveling the real world for too many years.  i read the comments there where some guy was on about how the owners of the dogs should be sued and prosecuted and i was thinking "what on earth makes you thinks these dogs have owners?" until i realized that this was the usa, where nearly all dogs actually do have human owners.

unlike in, say, sochi and in much of the rest of the world.

I am surprised, though, that the police didn't shoot the dogs, especially since neither of them were wearing collars.

I think a lot of people are underestimating the amount of blood and guts all over the school.
Dogs aren't like lions where they'd bite the neck and hold on until the prey died.
They'd bite and rip, bite and rip.
The deer won't drop at one bite.

I'm guessing the place looked like something out of Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Probably because they were people-friendly.  Do dogs need to be killed for doing something that comes naturally?   Not every cop is a drooling idiot.

Wrong.  My sister has been in a greyhound rescue program for 15yrs, and she lives on an island here in Savannah where the deer population is very high.

She and her husband have said on several occasions that their greyhounds take down full grown deer on a regular basis.  I scoffed until they showed me a couple pictures of one of the dogs on top of his catch.

Wolves operate the same way, probably a little more efficiently. I remember an old documentary that followed a small pack as they disembowled an elk on the run.

Weren't greyhounds originally bread to be hunting dogs specifically for fast prey?

police officers were able to locate their owners at a nearby home.

Keep your farking animals on your own farking property.
