I chewed my nails for years and years. It was stress. Finally dumped the stress in my life and now I annoy my co-workers by clipping my nails at my desk, which I have to admit is also kinda gross.

/dumb story bro

Surprised the Mirror has enough details to make out the story. Glad to see it wasn't the nails that killed him. Bleeding finger tips caught a bacterial infection that he wouldn't let heal.

Then the article went and talked to his mom, who said... i don't care, stopped reading there.

It sounds like he was a diabetic, too.

I used to be a big nail biter, almost as bad as this guy. My fingers would bleed sometimes as well, I remember when I stopped, in college at the library. My fingers were bleeding and they hurt and I just stopped. It was a tuesday and I remember that because now every second tuesday I clip my nails. Yes I'm weird.

I am a chronic nail biter, it's as if my hand and mouth are doing it without the knowledge of my noggin.
it is embarrassing, the condition of my nails and a disgusting habit. like the guy in TFA, i too have managed to stop for short periods of time but all it takes is that one little imperfection and i instantly start tearing at them layer by layer then you have to even them all out and that leads to nubs.

can't even pick a dime up off a hard surface :(

I don't think so. To be Darwin, it would have to be a 'hold my beer and watch this' kind of death

34 years of biting then randomly stopped almost three years ago.   Weird.   And it wasn't a nervous habit for me, more like a mindless one.

"John Gardener's habit had become so severe the infection turned sceptic and caused a fatal heart attack just days after his 40th birthday."

God punished that infection for its disbelief! Praise Jesus!

Once your own habits begin to doubt you, it's all over.

I was able to quit smoking just by up and deciding New Year's Day 2008 that I was done (I think I've had 3 cigarettes since), but I cannot muster up enough willpower to even say I'm done biting my nails (let along follow through with it).

They said when I started playing guitar/bass I'd want to keep them in better shape, but as long as I don't tear off too much so it hurts, I'm fine.

I used to be that way, but I forced myself to paint them on a regular basis for several months.  Once I stopped tearing them up, they got thicker and it was no longer comfortable to chew them.  However, I've transferred the habit to my cuticles, which I will pick at if there's even a small amount of dead skin.  I usually stop before they bleed...usually.

Funny thing is that I remember the day I started.  I was 6 and my grandmother accidentally scratched me trying to tickle me.  She had very long nails and I started biting them, swearing I'd never let mine get that long.

Chewed mine for about 30 years or so. Then just up and quit and haven't done it for 10 years.
Kinda weird now that I think about it.

I bite my nails when they get too long because when I notice it, I don't have clippers handy.
Biting them down to the nub all day long is nasty.

I had the bad habit of biting/sucking on my lips when I was a kid. It would also make a slurping like noise. It was bad enough that I started having bruises or sore (not sure of the correct English term, lesion maybe?) so I told a friend to hit me on my shoulder when I did it. I was cured of the habit within a couple of hours as he was very enthusiastic.

From the comments:   Biting your nails is something you can choose not to do , so don't do it , end of problem.

I bet this guy has a cure for depression, too: "Get over it, cheer up. Simple as that."

I'll have to take your word for it. For me, apparently it cut to the quick by flashing the page and promptly erasing itself. Maybe they're just copying the subject of the story.

Nails are gross and germy. Chewing them is nasty. You might as well lick the bus seats and doorknobs and handrails you touch and save yourself the trouble of letting all that filth fester under your raggedy nubbin nails til the next time you decide to gnaw at them.
