FTFA (actually about 1/2 of it:)

Investigators said Lord returned to Jacobs' residence after making the food delivery to the correct address.  Jacobs' met Lord at the end of the driveway and an argument began.  Lord allegedly placed a gun in the teen's face that discharged twice, striking both men. One of the bullets grazed Jacobs' neck and the second struck Lord in the forearm.  Lord was taken to Womack Army Medical Center and Jacobs was sent to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center for treatment.Investigators say they will not file charges in the case and both men have been told to take their dispute to a magistrate to settle.

Who does Lord the pizza driver know in the prosecutor's office? Attempted murder or manslaughter using a gun? Two shots? His brother must be the county attorney.

I'm thinking uh, appropriate charges would be trespassing, assault with a deadly weapon, attempted FIRST degree murder, etc.

My boss (company CEO) holds a masters in engineering and is a registered PE....when his previous company suddenly folded, his wife was pregnant....he delivered pizza until he found new work.

Sounds like home owner pulled a gun, pizza guy pulled some kung fu and they both ended up getting shot in the process. Which is most likely why the officers called it a draw.

Except the delivery driver pulled the gun, was 48, and the person at the home was 18 according to the article.

Oh sure, he gets points for taking any job he could get. His negative score comes from "pizza delivery" being the only job he could get. He's had a good 30 years to acquire ANY useful skills, and instead he's at the exact same place a brand new 18 year old worker is. That's pathetic. What a wasted life. 30 years of chances to do ANYTHING useful and he's employed only because people are too lazy to drive a mile to pick up a pizza. Yeah, it's better than nothing, but this essentially worthless waste of carbon is also taking that job experience from an 18 year old that needs some extra cash while attending college, so I really consider that a wash.

Sure the world needs ditch diggers. But if you're STILL digging ditches at 48, maybe you made you some bad decisions in the course of your life? There's nothing wrong with being a ditch digger or pizza delivery guy. But that should be a stop along the road, not your destination.

Maybe he should quit and go on welfare so the 18 year old can have a pizza delivery job?

Naw, that burdens everyone else. It might be too late for him to do anything useful with his life, but depending on how bad his meth/alcohol related health problems are he might be able to squeeze out another 20 years. In which case, he's still got time to hit up a trade school or entry level position somewhere that has actual advancement opportunity instead of squandering a job that's only purpose is to teach basic "welcome to the real world" lessons to kids. Because, honestly, working as a pizza delivery man isn't improving this guy's life at all.

And, of course, he can always just kill himself, freeing up not only the job but relieving society of the burden that's going to be his long term care after he starts collecting social security and his health declines. That would probably be the single best thing he's ever done for society too. There's no shame in admitting you screwed up and taking steps to mitigate the damage. Not that delivering pizzas doesn't help society in it's own small way, it's just that society would be better served by an 18 year old doing the same job while this guy's medicaid coverage suddenly stops.

Of course, worrying about the job is probably a moot point. Dude just got in a gunfight while out delivering pizzas (another sure sign he's a winner), I'm pretty sure his job is already back on the market.

I guess we differ on opinions on what this meth addicted alcoholic guy should be doing.  If he's just stupid, maybe additional schooling isn't the route to take - might be a waste of money for him.  And I don't personally think he should kill himself because he can't (or won't) get a better job than pizza delivery driver, but you are of course free to feel that way.

We also differ on our beliefs in intelligence. I think most human being share an overwhelming amount of the same DNA and same brain structure and produce piles of grey matter capable of roughly the same amount of thought. Sure, there are outliers on either side of the scale, but just about everyone fits in a narrow band of "smart enough to accomplish what anyone else does, plus or minus a little effort". Some trailer trash watching honey boo-boo, for example, is perfectly CAPABLE of being as smart as anyone else in the normal range. He/she simply chooses not to pursue paths that would demonstrate intelligence. Same with blonde bimbos, skater kids, stoners, rednecks, politicians, etc. Unless you live in a group home banging your arm into your chest, chances are you have the roughly the same mental capacity as everyone else. I'm pretty non-elitist on the intelligence thing. Same with race and stuff; there's really just not that much variation in the human genome. We are all pretty much the same.

As I highly doubt someone driving a car to deliver pizzas is banging his arm on his chest, he doesn't get a pass for intelligence. Pizza man here is (or was) perfectly capable of achieving more than he is. I'm not even going to give him the benefit of "tragedy beyond his control" and "he started on a really low rung", because 30 years is enough time to overcome anything. A dude climbed Mount Everest with one leg, this guy could surely have made something of himself.

We differ very greatly in our opinions about the intelligence level of the average human being.  I have a much lower opinion of them than you.  And for the most part, they aren't doing anything to positively influence my opinion.  Granted, the ones who aren't complete imbeciles don't draw my attention as much as the true idiots that really stand out, so I'm sure that skews my view a bit.

The old guy could be a real loser, or he might be working a second job so his family doesn't have to live on welfare.  That doesn't point to him having the highest skill set, for sure, but I rate it above the typical "how am I supposed to support my family on minimum wage" lazy loser.   Maybe he got a divorce and losses 30% of net to his ex.

But you're probably right - odds are he just sucks at life...we aren't required to give benefit of the doubt;)

On the lack of a charge, maybe the 18-year-old was that big of a dick the cops didn't have the heart to charge the older guy.   They say you should talk to the polilce but maybe after hearing the guy's story the police agreed the young man deserved it.

A lot of drivers carry concealed handguns regardless of the law or company rules.  There is too much violence against pizza drivers and their rolling ATMs (aka cars).  Most sane and honest police officers understand this.
