theflatline: CruJones: crawfish

Ah, last time I checked crawfish were fresh water creatures raised in ponds inland.

A rather large portion still come from Thailand.   Frozen.

/had a crawfish boil last weekend, not too small for this time of year

Meesterjojo: Oh Lord, more of this.

As stated yesterday- this is hardly new. What is surprising is that there are some fresh caught shrimp in SE Asia.

This is only a surprise for the uneducated, or those with Social Science, IT, Humanities degrees.

We don't want to face certain ugly truths because they would be very inconvenient. Normies (most of you), don't want to take the medicine required to remedy this. So we publish old, outdated, known information in order to spread the word- it's the First World thing to do. If we can educate others, then we've done our part! Woooo!

Try shopping all First World, with products manufactured with parts grown/produced in the same First World country. It's harder than you'd imagine, and you'd never be online to read this.

So rather than poo-poo slavery, let's face facts: The author was only able to Spread the Word(tm) by the use of slave labor. The author is probably clothed by slave labor, and fed by slave labor as well.

We love, we adore slavery. If we didn't, what would we do to change things other than hope/pray some "one" in a position of power will take the steps necessary?

Awww, STFU. While I get your minor point that Americans are apathetic, your primary point that you're better than everyone else is noted and it's corny. if you have information that others dont then educate without spending the majority of the time pontificating about how good you are for knowing something.

namatad: what_now: bdub77: Here's a harsh reality. Slavery runs the world. If you make over 35k, you are the 1%. If you make over 70k you are the 0.1%. In fact, according to the U.N. nearly half the world's population, 2.8 billion people, earn less than $2 a day and according to the World Bank, 95% of those living in the developing world earn less than $10 a day.

Yup. I try to be conscious of this in the things I use the most of - coffee, clothing, food- but the reality is that even in this country most of the agricultural work is done by illegal immigrants. And while they aren't slaves, they make very little money and have no protection or recourse from abuse. Let's call them "serfs".

You buy anything from Walmart? Slave made. You buy anything that was grown, picked, or processed in the South West? Serf made.

Unless every single thing you consume is made by hand- or by someone who's workers you personally know- you're contributing to slavery. Eventually, you have to learn to live with that.

/don't buy diamonds though- even lab created. No one needs diamonds.

THIS and other things like THIS.
Everyone lives in a country that was won by conquest.
And before a first nation chimes in, want to BET that your tribe conquered the tribe that was living there before you and we just dont have a record of it?

Should I care that white people stole america from non-white people? meh
Should I care that there were slaves in the past history of every nation? meh
Should I care injustice happens? meh

I wish we could fix all these problems. I will think twice about thai shrimp from now on, that's for sure.
But can I check everything? NOPE

I guess I could kill myself.

/grandparents were immigrants, so america isnt my fault.
/IF you are going to argue fruits of stolen property by going back to year X, I can argue we should go back 2X years and see who you stole the property from. It is only fair.

"I guess I could kill myself."

Now you're thinking.

Shtetl G: Here is my my go to shramp marinade:

1/3 of a cup of good extra virgin olive oil
4 or 5 cloves of fresh garlic through the micro plane
the juice of 1 lime
a couple of splashes of soy sauce and hot sauce
Fresh ground black pepper (1tsp)

Whisk until emulsified.  Marinade 1lb of shrimp for 20 minutes (the little buggers really absorb the flavor).  Grill 2 to 3 minutes per side on a red hot charcoal grill.  Savor the flavor of exploitation.

Minus the soy sauce, that sounds farking delicious, I'll keep that in mind. I don't typically use citrus with shrimp, I normally just pan fry with butter and garlic, but I've substituted lime for lemon cooking rock cod and it turned out well. Sometimes I'll use a chipotle sauce.

I love cooking seafood though, it's such a delicate operation to get it perfect. I find no challenge in properly doing most meals, but fish and shellfish? Oh the joy when I get it cooked to a perfect texture. The only way it can be better is if I caught them myself.

what_now: There is a disappointing lack of gumbo recipes in this thread.

1.Make a brown roux and cool it off.
2.  Have a beer
3.
Cut up celery, onion, green bell pepper, and garlic very fine like you would for a gazpacho.

Can of beef broth and can of diced or crushed or stewed tomatoes.
Heat that up with the veggies in it.
Season with what you call your spices, you can go Cajun or you can go creole or at this point, you can go farking Mexican if you want.
When it boils you can start whisking in the cold roux and thicken it up.

Simmer for a while to meld the seasonings.

Toss in some peeled, deveined shrimp, maybe some cleaned up clams, mussels, bits of fish.

Fark Okra.

Serve with bread.

Nabb1: I buy only locally caught Gulf shrimp.

My local grocer has fresh 31-40 Gulf shrimp for $18 a LB right now.  Frozen shrimp is $35 for a 2-lb bag.

WHAT IS HAPPENING?

Yeah, there's a Kroger but all their seafood smells like bleach and tastes wrong. Whatever happened to $6 a lb. skrimps?

hitlersbrain: If I could make one change to human DNA it would be to make downtrodden people instinctively band together and destroy the people oppressing them. The tolerance and even admiration (republicans) we have for cruel and oppressive power is one of our worst traits.

The problem has ALWAYS been that when they band together, a bunch of them die.

The US is where it is today because the downtrodden have JUST enough (bread and circuses) to keep them from dying to get more.  This is the biggest threat to the GOP cutting off food stamps.  Starving people have nothing to lose.  Fed and entertained people? MEH, easier to watch my shows and just mellow out.

I am MORE surprised that governments havent been completely in favor of legalizing POT for this reason.
Cheaper and safer than alcohol, with none of the violent effects of alcohol.  Dope the masses into giggling happiness and they will never revolt.

Kraftwerk Orange: kaseyfarksdaladies: offmymeds: kaseyfarksdaladies: I'm conflicted.  The Bible is against shellfish but pro slavery.  What to do, what to do.

/I'll ponder it while having gay sex

Ummm...I think the ban on shellfish is for people of the Jewish faith.

IT'S IN LEVITICUS, HEATHEN!

Old Testament laws don't apply to Christians, except for the Ten Commandments.  The whole point of Christianity is that Jesus broke the old Jewish covenants to establish a new one.

For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.

offmymeds: While Thailand's seafood slave labor is deplorable, it's probably nowhere near what African blood diamond workers experience.

All parts of the world are different.
Some are WONDERFUL - Sweden.
Some are farking Somalia or Haiti.

Unless we are willing to return to the days of imperialism, this will always be the case.
Even something as "simple" as peacekeeping is virtually impossible to execute.

So Thailand is unwilling to stop the shrimp and sex slave market?
OK
Sanctions. Well those never work unless everyone agrees with the sanctions.
War. Destroy the existing government. Patrol the waters, kill all the slavers.
Rinse and Repeat.

Except that history is rife with examples of how bad humans are at fixing these problems.
Look at something as "simple" as basic human rights.  People in most muslim countries have zero freedom of religion. But the rest of the world is OK with that.  HOW would we change that?

The shining beacon of freedom has in some ways been the only solution which has worked. Slowly.

Do your best to buy locally sourced foodstuffs. It's getting easier and easier to do so, and doing so is a market "force multiplier," helping to quell such activities. Yes, it's more expensive - that's the damned point. If you can afford to do so, do so.

People like that often use the proselytizing as their contribution to ending the practice. It accomplishes nothing, but it makes them feel like they're doing something.

They used to have a kick ass shrimp farm in the desert, just 40 miles south.  I could get a cheap 10 lb bag, frozen, at my doorstep with zero shipping.  Lousy foreign shrimp ruined the profit margin and now it's an algae farm.

I refuse to pay what other vendors want to charge for substandard shrimp; I've pretty much gone without for years.  Most of it tastes like pure chlorine anymore anyways.

Slave labor and cheap international shipping rumps local.
Pain in the ass.

If only we were LESS interested in "FREE MARKET" and more interested in fair market.
Oh well.  Wont change until we kill off a few more of the free market GOP.

bdub77: xtech: bdub77: Things made with slave labor (this is not an exhaustive list):

Coffee
Chocolate
Clothing
Cell phones
Computers
Diamonds and Gold
Sugar
Cotton (go figure, the poster product of slavery)
Pretty much anything made in China
Shrimp

Here's a harsh reality. Slavery runs the world. If you make over 35k, you are the 1%. If you make over 70k you are the 0.1%. So yeah. Most of the people in our world are basically slaves. That doesn't mean we shouldn't work to improve our conditions or theirs, but merely to acknowledge the fact that forced slavery and wage slavery is probably roughly the equivalent when you're talking half the world earning less than 2 bucks a day.

you forgot IPHONES. there is documented proof that apple uses slave labor in china. samsung? not so much...

I said cell phones. Also, most cell phone manufacturers use minerals mined from slave labor mines in Africa. And you don't think the working conditions at Samsung are nearly as bad as Foxconn?

Citation for that last statement.

I cannot check the material facts of this article, but look at this one sentence:

Thailand is America's oldest Asian ally. The two nations have been buddies since the Vietnam War, when the US launched jets from Thailand to carpet-bomb suspected communist rebels.

Uh, no.  India and the Philippines have effectively never not been our allies. Burma (occasionally) and Indonesia (officially) were our allies in WWII.  South Korean and Japanese forces actually saw combat side-by-side with American troops fighting the North Koreans (1950-1953). Thailand didn't formally become a U.S. ally until 1954.

And we weren't bombing communist "rebels" in Vietnam, but elements of a communist country (North Vietnam).  Plus, although B-52s are jet-powered, they aren't what you typically think of as "jets".

So am I supposed to take their word for the stuff I cannot check?  The sea seems a dangerous place to be depending on slaves.
