How is this asiinine, Subby? I found it interesting. A friend of mine in the the thumb of Michigan has seen at least two Snowy Owls in her area. I'm a tad jealous...they're beautiful creatures.

Carn & others, irruption was defined in source NPR article (or at least what subby submitted). Verb irrupt in 2 dictionaries concurs: to break or burst in; make an invasion from Am Heritage Dictionary of Eng Language paperback, 1970. 3d entry in Webster's New Intl Dictionary of Eng Language 1926, 3" thick, cites confused with eruption which seems to be what you perceive.
Like HKWolf above, found this interesting. Several comments to actual article deeper in sequence were Highly Entertaining, esp those made by one Kelly Cox who I'd really like to compliment on her wit!

This is very cool.  I don't think I have ever seen an owl in the wild but it is not surprising since I spend most of my time indoors.

I saw a snowy owl last month, here in Massachusetts. I assumed it came here to get gay married to an osprey.
