TFA mentions nothing about the ability of the Mongols to forecast weather, merely take advantage of abundant grass growth to breed and train a huge cavalry.

What is with the recent phenomena of ascribing all good or bad abilities to a historic figure?

Not every historical figure is a polymath. Sometimes they are just lucky.

/Mussolini made the trains run on time so he must be a logistics expert right?

FTA:  The traditional view has been that the Mongols were desperately fleeing harsh conditions in their craggy, mountainous homeland.

Really? I was always under the impression that his push west was to punish the governor of Qtrar for massacring a Mongolian trade envoy.

LAUGHTER OL of course this is the true thing did they not watch the movie called  Mongol? It explains this very much. He did the conquering of the lightning after sexing the wolf which was actually the lion imported to France.

What is with this phenomenon of getting trolled by the headline and not reading the article? Also, what is with airplane food?

2014-03-10 08:28:17 PM
Someone didn't read the article. There was no weather forecast. It was just favorable weather coinciding with the rise to power of GK.

Maybe that's why the headline has a question mark?

For all of you Farkers who may not know this, the widely accepted view of Khan's (Genghis or Kubla) as complete and utter barbarians, brutish and without even a whisper of intellect or knowledge, is primarily due to a history book written by a Harvard professor in the late 1800's.  Most of it was simply made up as he was a racist who was in favor of the continued ban on Asian immigrants (Chinese Exclusion Act) which was being debated in the era.

This is also a big part of the reason why at the time, those children born with what we now call Down's Syndrome were at the time called "Mongoloids."  This was a racist explanation for why this genetic anomaly existed, the claim was that G Khan and his Mongol hordes had raped a bunch of "white women" back in the day and that every once in a while there was a baby born who was a genetic "throw back."  Asians being depicted as less physical and mentally capable than the obviously superior "Caucasian" race their genetic short-comings were exposed in these "genetically flawed" children.

The reality is quite a bit different and a good starting point to getting much closer to the truth than a hundred year old bunch of racist bunkum, would probably be The Secret History of the Mongols.  I doubt few know that the two Khan's built more churches, synagogues, buddhist temples and Muslim temples than anyone else in history.  They exchanged diplomats with dozens of nations and its from the surviving writings of the Vatican's envoy, where some of the material from the book was drawn.  He talked about the Khan's having a weekly round table discussion, where Christian priests, rabbis, imams and Buddhist were invited to address a given topic and instruct the Khan's court as to how they addressed specific issues of morality, current events, etc.

It's well worth your time if you're interested in a more accurate version of the historical record.

All while slaughtering entire cities. It's fair to say that Kublai was far more civilized by exposure to China, but to say that the Mongols weren't barberous conquerors ignores their history. It was submit or die.

Qtrar was part of the Khwarezm Empire. I was wrong about one thing: It was the local governor, Inalchuq, arrested Khan's emissary. When Khan demanded he be turned over to the Mongolians, the Shah Ala ad-Din Muhammad had the emissaries killed.

Accurate weather forecasting was hugely important for the planning of war.  It's not like they had doppler radars or the weather channel.  Not sure if GK was an expert weather forecaster, but chances are someone was in his command staff.

There's an air force special operations unit that predicts the weather with one hand while killing terrorists with the other.  Combat weathermen, seriously.  It's important for airplanes and shiat.
