HaywoodJablonski: One of my favorite covers is Elton John's cover of Elton John's "Candle in the Wind" he made for princess Diana

/No

My wife doesn't understand why that song pisses me off... "But it was her favorite song..." Big farking deal, he's Elton John, he and Taupin could have sat down and written something NEW for her.

DrBenway: Crewmannumber6: That was 23 No shiats and 3 who gives a shiats

A little pop heavy for Fark, but I learned not too long ago that Tracy Ullman's They Don't Know
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DfRI1XjDFCU

was a cover of Kirsty Maccoll
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmpfIA3lPWk

Fun fact: That's Kirsty doing the "BAY-BEE!" on Tracy's cover, too.

Weird... I didn't even know that this song existed until the ride into work this morning. We were listening to the 80's station on Sirius, and it came on. Neiter my wife or I even realized Tracey even HAD a song in the 80s, and I graduated in '88...

Huge Blue Anthropomorphic Jug: I Will Survive - Cake

I don't know if it's been mentioned or if it qualifies... But it's a great song and probably the only one some people have heard from them, even though they have many more...

The Distance

was their biggest hit. I Will Survive was a close second, but it didn't burn up the radio like Distance did...

Kinda hard to tell if she would have liked the new song...

Nemo's Brother: Mugato: Most of those kind of suck.

The Guns n Roses cover of Live and Let Die was better than the original, imo.

Agreed. And I would say Hendrix's most popular song is a Bob Dylan cover.

I'd have to go with Purple Haze.

Damn! You had to dig deep for that cut. I havent heard that song in almost 30 years! It came out well before her TV show did too IIRC

For me, the most famous song by The Ataris is "San Dimas High School Football Rules".

I learned about Kirsty's original version in a documentary about her
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=REvLEngLL5M
that I found after I watched a documentary about her with the Pogues' Fairy tale Of New York
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SW_WSQpewNY

Both well worth watching

Gunderson: Should I Stay or Should I Go

Huh?

You mean I fought the law? or Pressure Drop? Or Time is Tight ? Or Armagideon Time? or Police and Thieves or...?

Should I stay or Should I go was an oriiginal, but they did do a lot of covers.

Oh, and who knew Train in Vain was a Country song.

It really does sound better that way.

Yes, I meant "I fought the Law".  I stand erected.

Sure, to you and anybody else who knows them from anything other than their one dip into the major label scene. To anyone else, all they've ever heard of was the "Boys..." cover. Anyway, I thought they were a great live band the few times I saw them in the pre-"So Long Astoria" days. Wouldn't mind seeing one of the reunion-lineup shows if they come my way.

FirstNationalBastard: What, subby, you think the Motown guys (besides Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder) were writing their own stuff?

Don't forget Smokey Robinson. He wrote his own group's stuff as well as a ton of songs for other Motown groups.

No Red Hit Chili Peppers? Higher Ground is easily their best song. They are lucky they didn't go alien ant farm after that.

/learned that "I put a spell on you" was not an original creedence song only about a month ago

Im not sure this is still their best known song, but Ive been a fan since Ana Ng and have the kids album so I may not be a biased source.

The My Little Pony Killer: Sinbox: Would it have been preferable had I prefaced the listing "Covers I've Really Dug Upon Hearing During My Lifetime To Date"?

It would have been more honest to say "check out all this spam!"

No, it wasn't.

Yes it was.

Oh, and I'd argue that there are more popular songs for Whitney Houston than "I Will Always Love You"

No it wasn't.  Axl Rose sounds like a female version of Janis Joplin.

High praise there!

They're both so awful...

I have never understood the adoration of Joplin for her singing.

I swear to god the only reason people like her is because they think they're supposed to.

Rod Stewart's "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" by the Revolting Cocks is also fantastic.
