All "cover" lists fail without Richie Havens.

2014-03-11 04:15:34 AM
One of my favorites Pearl Jam's cover of Last Kiss

Terrible covers:  William Hung's cover of She Bangs and Kelly Osborne's cover of Papa Don't Preach

2014-03-11 04:19:57 AM

Mugato: Most of those kind of suck.

The Guns n Roses cover of Live and Let Die was better than the original, imo.

As a Sir Paul fan, I completely agree with you.

Entire discussion fails without Iron Man by The Cardigans.

My absolute favorite cover version this month: Sweet Child O' Mine by Postmodern Jukebox

Actually, all of the Postmodern Jukebox covers are very high on my list at the moment.

I see your taste in music is as horrid as your taste in movies.

I'm surprised the list didn't include "Beause the Night" by 10,000 Maniacs. Love that song, and love their version of it.

Thank you.  I about had an aneurysm.

tangentially in the same vein

I don't feel like dancing

original for comparison

/like both.

Yes it was.

Oh, and I'd argue that there are more popular songs for Whitney Houston than "I Will Always Love You"

No it wasn't.  Axl Rose sounds like a female version of Janis Joplin.

Thudfark: Teenage Head - Hoodoo Gurus
Holiday in Cambodia - Sister Double Happiness
Chamber Brothers - Can't Turn You Loose

Back on target, the article misses Blondie - Tide is High, Pet Shop Boys - You Were Always On My Mind to name a couple.

Blondie's better known for "Call Me" and "Heart of Glass."

Pet Shop Boys for "West End Girls"

2014-03-11 07:13:24 AM

100 Watt Walrus: "Personal Jesus" - Marilyn Manson

Also "Personal Jesus" - Gravity Kills.  If you can get past the deliberate "sounds like a CD skipping" effect.

AppleChill: Sweet Jane (Cowboy Junkies) is in there twice.  It just happened to be the first one I looked for.  Weird.

Me Too. Does Lou Reed's solo cover of Velvet Undergound count as well?

I respectfully disagree with everything you've said so far

I like punk covers of 80s hair metal tunes. The cover of Natalie Imbrugila's "Torn" by  Off by One is fun and cheesy as well

He should have been shot for looping Zeppelin's "Kashmir" and Jimmy Page should have been flogged for letting him

Good point, but that's for his other classic tune "Come With Me"

One of my favorite covers is Elton John's cover of Elton John's "Candle in the Wind" he made for princess Diana

Smeggy Smurf: 1200 covers and it ignored country music.  Go figure

"Best Known" songs.

DRTFA, was the Dead in there?
Or any of the other stinky "Jam Bands"?
PHISH?

Noodle bands?

Club bands?

Band-aids?

A little pop heavy for Fark, but I learned not too long ago that Tracy Ullman's They Don't Know

was a cover of Kirsty Maccoll

I have never understood the adoration of Joplin for her singing.

129. Born Under A Bad Sign (Albert King cover) - Cream

139. Born Under A Bad Sign (Albert King cover) - Cream

You must really like Cream.

2014-03-11 09:20:06 AM
I Will Survive - Cake

I don't know if it's been mentioned or if it qualifies... But it's a great song and probably the only one some people have heard from them, even though they have many more...

mcmnky: Kyosuke: "Fail"?

Tag is for thinking David Lee Roth is best known for "California Girls" and for Sinbox barfing all over the thread.

Also for making it sound like a big revelation that that song was a cover, along with Walk this Way, Smooth Criminal, A Little Help From My Friends, Mrs. Robinson and The Boys of Summer...

Most people drawing breath know that those are covers. At least those people who are old enough to know the songs in the first place. If they had wanted to impress me with their trivia, they could have at least included Santana on the list. Instead, they get a 3/10. Some of the stuff is interesting, 90% is farking pretty common knowledge.

Agreed. And I would say Hendrix's most popular song is a Bob Dylan cover.

dr_blasto: Also, Metallica's cover of Breadfan by budgie was great. Concrete Blonde's cover of "everybody knows" was pretty high up there too.

It doesn't belong on the list because it's not their "best known" song, but it was an AWESOME cover.

awakeinsd: me first and the gimme gimmes.

I don't know if they count, since they exist 100% to be a cover band. This is more supposed to be a 'surprise' type of thing. Then again, I think the list sucks because of the blindingly obvious shiat like 'Walk This Way', and the omission of 'Black Magic Woman'.

Gimmes is SUCH a fun band to listen to, though...
