I thought they already had open air urinals at every tree.

To some people, a park, by its very definition, is an open air urinal.

so, ladies... does this work for you?

No problem.

do the pedophiles and flashers wait in line to use it one at a time or do they all just use it simultaneously?  Gonna be a lot of them at this park.

they have them all over the place in Amsterdam

I don't see how this is any less private than the "trough" urinals at a lot of places (I remember "going" at Dodger Stadium as a little kid - like 4 and 5 - and being terrified of them).  Unless someone has a drone flying overhead, they're not going to see anything.

Article tries to make a big deal outta nothing.  They are replacing the porta-potties with perm facilities and adding a couple urinals in heavy traffic areas.  The guys back would be toward the 'door' so carry-on.  I do see a couple possible issues with smell though.

If every male American would pee in the yard once a day.. That would save ~450 million gallons of fresh water a day.

San Francisco park...ball fields...

Hmm..

My dog used to pee in the yard more than once a day. It didn't save any water and it killed the grass.

Dolores Park isn't new, though the bathrooms there are bordering on toxic waste zones.

brap: What will happen to the old open air urinal known as Buena Vista Park?

Buena Vista Park is one of my favorites, I've never noticed it being particularly gross. It's also the second-oldest park in the city after Golden Gate Park.

What's the big deal?  They have these things all over Paris. Not only that but Americans get all weirded out over men discretely using the side of the road where it's a common occurrence in Europe.

Waitasec.  What genius got a grant to develop, and presumably patent, an open-air urinal for dogs?

That's like patenting trees.

Dolores Park is great since on a nice day it's a douchebag magnet which means fewer idiots at all of the other parks.  Win!

Most every year I work the NYC marathon. I am posted at a "security heightened area" because of my clearance.
Common thing to see folks drop shorts and perform the task of personal waste removal.
Nothing of note, really. The urine isn't too big a deal, the turds and frequently loose stools can turn a stomach, though.

Maybe I'll start doing this and piss on my weeds. I wonder what dietary changes make the best defoliant.

To the people concerned about pedos and peeps - how could this be WORSE then closed off bathrooms? There's no privacy for a peeper to peep. They'd be blindingly obvious.

I know I was playing off the filthy Haight freeloading urine-soaked hippie stereotype to what was apparently rip-roaringly successful comic effect.  I'll have to work on my Barry Goldwater imitation.

CSB:
End of last summer, I moved out of THE shiattiest "house" in DC (I'm exaggerating, but only a bit) - a chunk of our kitchen ceiling rotted away and fell down one fine evening, tiles fell off the bathroom wall (BECAUSE THE WALL BEHIND IT HAD ROTTED AWAY), we found out later that a tenant had done all kinds of unauthorized repairs (like building a wall around the AC's air filter)...anyway.

There was a full bathroom upstairs, but as there were 4 of us in the house, nature often called to several of us at once. So we used the backyard (there was a fence on either side of the patio, but anyone walking in the alley behind the place would have had a great view of a dude pissing) and called it "the downstairs bathroom".

// I suspect many of us have similar stories
