Let me see if I understand this correctly, subby - you're saying that the entire production was hit by a train, except for Raul Julia?

That was Raul Julia's last movie. I wonder if he would have done it if he knew...

And there was one good thing.

His Wiki doesn't suggest that.

My understanding was that his grandkids asked him to do it, so he did.

That said, still better than Legend of Chun Li.

InmanRoshi: Their first mistake?  Making a movie based on Street Fighter.

Not necessaily.  The animated ones were quite nice.

The problem was they discounted making it a tournament movie offhand, when really, that's more or less what it needed to be.  It's the story of a powermad type using a series of legit and underground fighting contest to select warriors for his personal army.

I'll forever wonder how they screwed that fairly basic premise up so badly.

Favorited!

I loved this movie because of Raul Julia. Same with The Adams Family, he made that movie enjoyable for me.

Except it wasn't... not originally. The article dances around the issue by talking about Hasbro's cross-licensing, but the screenplay itself was originally proposed as a G.I. Joe film.

As opposed to the cinematic masterpiece that has been every other movie based on a video game.

2014-03-10 02:39:35 PM
Here's the problems I saw off the top of my head:

-Whoever wrote the screenplay had no knowledge whatsoever of the game outside of a few crib notes passed on to him from his kid after he used five dollars worth of quarters on the local Street Fighter 2 machine, which was marginally better than the Super Mario movie which didn't use source material at all and relied solely on peyote and repeated viewings of Soylent Green.

-They put the focus on Guile instead of the Shotokan twins because USA and his theme went with everything. Also they made Dhalsim an evil scientist because someone saw that early Street Fighter cartoon (the cheap American one, not the anime) and assumed it was canon.

-Kylie Minogue only wore the leotard for the tie-in game and not the movie. The closest she ever got was a military miniskirt uniform. The rest of the time she wore pants. Look it up if you don't believe me.

2014-03-10 02:39:44 PM
His great acting in the movie was because he was the only one who could scroll up cinemas.

TFA: "Yes," says Van Damme, "Okay. Yes, yes, yes. It happened. I was in Thailand, we had an affair. Sweet kiss, beautiful lovemaking. It would be abnormal not to have had an affair, she's so beautiful and she was there in front of me every day with a beautiful smile, simpatico, so charming, she wasn't acting like a big star. I knew Thailand very well, so I showed her my Thailand. She's a great lady."

I can't blame him. I'd also show her my Thailand in the same situation.

I'm glad they could make a profitable animated film about it.   Animation is suitable for a niche market.   You just outsource a bunch of cheap offshore animators to crap it out, the fan boys and hard core gamers will consume it and you turn a profit.   But to expect a live action big budget studio film to return profit based on a video game that basically revolves around rapidly punching buttons was an invitation to burn money.

He had been ill... but apparently had been responding well to treatment. It was kind of a sudden thing that in a few days his health just went from bad to worse. I still blame the this movie for killing him.

Best part in TFA.
