Looking forward to that Wichita St disappointment. Year of the 16-1 upset?

Want to do well in your office pool? Pick all the favorites. But that's no fun, since every time there is an upset you can't yell "I had that one!"

Of course. History has proven this will be the year of the midmajor, right? After years of preparation, this will be the year Seton Hall...I'm sorry, my bad folks...this'll be the year that Valparaiso...oh, my bad, let me check the script...this'll be the year that Gonzaga...Oooops, that was a few years back...this'll be the year Boise State...oh, whoops, that's for a different sport...ah, here it is...this'll be the year for Wichita State to win one for the just-happy-to-be-heres.

You said 16-1 upset and have now changed your argument to national title.

Pick a point and stick with it. Don't change your point to fit your needs.

All of these small schools I referenced have held some promise to be the great midmajor hope of collegiate sports, and they've all had fantastic falls back to reality since. Wichita St. is just the latest pretender with an easy schedule to get a 1 seed, which I'd imagine they get given their record against powerhouses such as...?, but just like every year where the heavily hyped underdog turns out to be a bust, Wichita State will soon discover the hard way that its wings are made of wax.

Here's the thing: "Next big thing mid-majors" tend to perform as expected in the tournament. They just, quite simply, don't get ranked as No.1 or No. 2 seeds all that often. In the past five years only two real mid-majors were given high seeds: San Diego State and Gonzaga. San Diego State lost to a No. 3 seed while Gonzaga was upset... by Wichita State.  That's not exactly a huge sample.

Counter that: Of the seeds ranked five or higher to make it to the Final Four over the last five year, four have been midmajors (VCU, Butler twice, and Wichita State) with only one Major (Michigan State).

Wichita is legitimately a great team. Their problem is they haven't played anyone since November, and who knows how they'll react the first time they trail at some point after the midpoint of the second half. They could be fine, or they could fold simply because they waltzed thru their conference. They won't lose to a 16-seed, but they might struggle against the 8-9 seed depending on the matchup. And they can't count on getting a double digit seed in the sweet sixteen like they did last year.

Without addressing the substance of your post, why did you pick a longstanding Big East team as your first example of a "midmajor"?

(OK, I'll get to the substance just a little: picking them as victims of a 16-1 upset is really dumb. The worst you can say about Wichita State is that they spent the year beating the shiat out of inferior teams. But "inferior teams" are exactly what 16 seeds are.)

2014-03-10 12:30:17 PM
Oh, and the two week layoff won't help. MVC teams usually struggle in the first half of the first game of the tourney because of that extended break. That won't really matter in Wichita's case since they'll play a 16-seed, but it's still yet another thing to give pause to picking them for a deep run.

They're #4 on KenPom's ratings so whatever you think of their schedule, a highly respected schedule-adjusted power rating has them rated as properly being a 1 seed at the moment.

Yeah, but KenPom has Louisville at number 2.  What's up with that?

The how come I'm really hoping that My Favorite Team ends up in whatever bracket has them as a #1 seed?  Pretty sure I'm not the only one feeling that way.

If they prove me wrong, I'll be the first to admit it, but as of now, without seeing brackets yet they are the team in the top ten I vote most likely to be gone in the first weekend.

You're hoping your team matches up with them because, unlike the other one seeds, they've got that question mark precisely because they haven't played anyone tough in four months. You'd rather face an unknown who is probably a great team but might react poorly to adversity since they haven't faced any than a known superior team who has played other top teams and won. That's an easy call.

Well, yes.  Or, if they crumble like an overcooked biscuit, My Favorite Team can take advantage of the collapsed brackets.  Or, it we meet in the tournament, we could smoke them.

Basically, you have restated what I stated.  I don't believe in them because they haven't shown me anything.  Why on earth do I want to play against the only undefeated team?  Shouldn't we all be scared of them, like the 1991 UNLV team?

Know how I know you haven't watched a single Shocker game this year?

They were down 19 with 12 minutes left @ Missouri State.  They didn't fold.  Fred VanVleet grew six inches and began breathing fire and smote all before him.

Missouri State isn't comparable to an single digit seed in the tourny.

So that still doesn't answer the question mark that's hanging out there. If I were a fan of anyone other than Creighton, I'd be rooting to be placed in Wichita's bracket, too. Because the unknowns are preferable to the knowns of the rest of the 1-seeds.
