Zizzowop: I'm still fuzzy on the definition of comfort food. Is there such a thing as uncomfortable food? And if it is uncomfortable, why are you eating it? And what about people from other cultures, I mean a guy from the middle east might love a good falafel with pita chips, but has never had a grilled cheese sandwich in his life.

/just saying

As I understand it, "comfort food" refers to any meal that can significantly elevates one's mood beyond simply eliminating the feeling of hunger.  Meals that qualify tend to be high in fat and simple starches--such meals have been shown to affect one's mental state in a similar manner to opiates.  However, a meal might also qualify if a particularly happy memory is associated with it (think of the climactic scene from "Ratatouille"), which makes an objective definition pretty much impossible.

smoky2010: I'm not watching anything about grilled cheese unless it includes a little reach-around for tomato soup. You can't have one without the other.

\I also like grilled cheese with slices of spam cooked into it.

It's in there.  I was raised on grilled cheese and tomato soup.  It was always Campbell's soup and plain white bread with Velveeta cheese.  My mother was an uninspired cook at best.  Now, I bake my own bread, buy real cheese, and make my own tomato soup that beats Campbell's all hollow.  But it's still a favorite comfort food meal.
