Millions in farm subsidies flow freely to DC residents who don't actually farm

Taxpayer subsidies were also paid out to Gerald Cassidy, the founder of one of Washington's most powerful lobbying firms, Cassidy & Associates; Charlie Stenholm, a former congressman; and Chuck Grassley, a Republican senator from Iowa. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack continues to receive subsides even though he has overseen the agency that pays them since 2009.

Honestly, I agree with farm subsidies as they are intended, we obviously need better oversight.

The idea is that you are paid in order to maintain arable land. Maintaining large amounts of farm land via proper crop rotation keeps us from having another dust bowl. It also allows us to seriously ramp up supply if imports are suddenly blocked for some reason. Now how much to pay farmers not to grow things is certainly up for debate, and certainly we need to monitor the land to make sure it is fertile land.

As for as Farrakhan goes, as long as the farms it owns are being maintained, I don't care of the "charity" status of his land.

You forgot these two:

Senator Max Baucus (D-Montana), a man who is largely responsible for killing any real health care reform in the Senate's reform bill, took about $250,000 in subsidies.  So, it's not just Big Pharma paying off Baucus.  Of course, he's no longer a Senator, he's our Ambassador to China.  See!  Farming pays off.

Senator Blanche Lincoln (D-Arkansas), one of the four Lieberman-esque Democratic Senators that were hell-bent on killing real reform in the Senate's health care reform bill, also took subsidies - about $700,000 worth.  Blanche, isn't a Senator anymore, but she's still tight with her friends on the hill as a lobbyist.

© See, presenting both sides to an issue leaves little to the imagination!

Having learned a bit about ag policy, and farm subsidies from working with a group who runs some of the economics for them, there are situations where it's beneficial. Sadly, the majority of it is a scam and rather misguided, bordering on wholesale corruption.

The thing that pissed me off most was learning that there are small farmers with crop insurance who could have a completely good crop ready to cut and take to market, and could legally let it die and take the money from crop insurance instead. I think it would be wrong to force farmers in that situation to take their crop to market, but that the insurance payment wasn't conditional on their crop status, as marketably bad, is what really bugged me. That and the farmer being an asshole for letting good crop go bad, and gaming the system.
