"Because pure alcohol can alter antifreeze chemicals and allow them to be flushed out of an animal's body, Charlie was given 700ml of vodka over two days via a tube."

Wrong.  It's because ethylene glycol has two primary means of being metabolized, one fast way via the liver and then a slower way via a means I've forgotten.  Unfortunately, the fast way leads to toxicity.  Get the subject drunk, and the liver spends all its time processing the alcohol instead of the coolant, allowing the latter to be metabolized out the slow but non-toxic way.
