My alma mater, class of '85...

Well, there's a teaching moment

2014-03-09 08:32:12 PM
It happened because some dumbshiat, bottom-of-the-class drama teacher didn't bother to check the weight rating on the stage modules before crowding half the goddamn freshman class onto them.

I clicked expecting a stage collapse. Instead, I got "a couple of people fall into the orchestra pit."

You got both.  A couple of the modular units collapsed and dumped the kids into the orchestra pit.

Carpenter should have studied Dynamics instead of Statics.

Looks like the carpenter did fine, and the dumbass drama director stuck some folding tables up against the front of the stage so that he could fit ALL the snowflakes up there at the same time.

It starts out full frame video and then suddenly switches to vertical video.  Is this the new version of the rickroll?

I salute you.

One of the hardest lessons for my kids has been that most items are only strong enough to hold up certain, low weight. They have collapsed bookshelves by climbing on them, collapsed a decorative brick wall by climbing on it, broken a couch by jumping off the second floor landing onto it...

So far they haven't broken any bones, but my oldest just got a GoPro for Christmas. I'm waiting.

According to this article, the original stage was built in the 80s, and an extension was added in 1996. The extension is what collapsed.   If hadn't all been towards the front of the stage, the main stage might have held up ok.

Remember to break step cadets.   Don't march over bridges.

It amazes me how weight limit is a hard thing to learn.   I have lost track of the amount of times I had to pick my son up saying "boy, how did you think that was a smart thing to do?"

You do realize that those are two different videos shot on two different devices, in different locations, and then edited together, right? I'm totally assuming that you know that and just really really don't like vertical video.

OH MY GOD, WHAT HAPPENED TO THOSE POOR KIDS?  DID THEY SURVIVE?  ARE THEY ALRIGHT?   IT LOOKED LIKE AT LEAST LIKE A FEW PEOPLE FELL AN INCREDIBLE DISTANCE.  THE ODDS OF SURVIVING THAT, OH JESUS, THAT WAS SO CRAZY.  MY HEART IS RACING JUST WATCHING THAT.  MY STOMACH IS STARTING TO ACHE.  THIS MAKES ME WANT TO CALL MY GRANDMOTHER TO ASSURE HER I'M STILL OKAY AND TO SEE IF SHE CAN SEND ME A LITTLE BIT OF MONEY.  SO SORRY ABOUT THE ALL CAPS, BUT THIS VIDEO WAS SO DISTURBING, I LITERALLY DON'T HAVE CONTROL OF MY EMOTIONS OR FINGERS OR CAPS LOCK BUTTON.

Also, high school stages are not generally known for their strict adherence to professional standards. Watching it reminded me of this.

/seriously, did they actually think they were capturing anything at all on that 1982 Datsun phone?
//yes, I know there's no such phone - called sarcasm; this is Fark..

Which is why I agree with bojon, the carpenter/contractor has some explaining to do.  My logic is, the stage should've been built like you would build a floor in a house, or like a deck.  That would mean a proper joist every 16" on center with solid supports.  I have a feeling they had the maintenance man toss it up during a summer.

My first phone was a 74 AMC Gremlin.  The battery life on that thing was horrible, with a two minute call followed by 10hr recharge.
